Help: how to find a Fox body AI car for sale?

Hello,

I live in Sydney Australia and am new to the AI forum. I am looking for help in sourcing a Fox body race car.

I race in the New South Wales state circuit racing championship in a category called Improved Production. It is similar in many ways to AI. The category allows any mass produced touring car sold in Australia to be raced with modifications governed by a tight set of rules. Cars homologated by the FIA for Group A are also permitted. Whilst the Fox body Mustang was not sold in Australia the GT coupe was homologated for Group A in 1983 and 1985 , and so it is permissable. One of Australias most famous touring car drivers, Dick Johnson raced a Mustang GT in the mid-80s. To my knowledge there are only about 3 Fox body race cars in Australia, all historic (aka very expensive) Group A cars.

Anyway, I've been looking at a number of US websites that sell suspension, steering and other parts for AI cars, places like Griggs, Steeda etc. What I have not been able to find though is a website that has these types of cars for sale. I have looked at racingjunk.com, and there are a few notchback cars for sale but no coupes.

Any help in tracking down a 1983-85 GT coupe race car would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have access to a 1990 coupe which is set up for AIX right now but is ready for AI with a detuned motor and smaller rubber.

Doug -

In the US, Ford made the Fox "coupe", AKA, "notchback" as well as a convertible, and hatchback.

Which body style can you use?

Adam,

I can only use the hatchback, as shown in the third of your photos.

I have tracked down a few hatchbacks but all are 87-89 models. If I was to buy one of these I'd have to source the various different parts (dash, bonnet, front, side glass) from an 85. Another way of getting what I need would be to find a cheap 85 GT roller.

Getting the car to Australia is pretty easy. There are lot of companies who import cars in containers to Australia out of LA and NY.

Doug - look for 1985 and 1986 models. The interior and exterior parts are the same. It's under the hood where things changed - 1985 was the last year for a 4bl carbed 5.0L. In 1986, Ford introduced SEFI.

Unfortunately, Ford only made that exact body style (particularly, the front end) for those two years. Decent parts, and decent cars, are becoming harder to find.

Check dfwstangs.net (primarily the Dallas/Fort Worth TX area), corral.net, and foureyedpride.com.

Doug,

call Cortex Racing and ask them about the AIX roller they are trying to sell. This was top of class car that is being retired to make room for a newer production car. I don't know what they will take for it but you can discuss it with them.

The Chassis is in the Sonoma shop.

Thanks for the tips.

Adam, the foureyedpride site is a good source of standard Foxbodies and parts. It lead me to craigslist which has lots of good prospects as well.

I checked with the Cortex guys. That car has been parted out but the shell is available. It looks too heavily modified for my purposes, but thanks for the tip anyway.
