Engine Change/Repair Question

I have an S2000, and apparently I need some engine repair/work. I have been investigating the option of just replacing my engine with a used engine; which might end up saving me some money (amazing what can be found on the car forums).

The engine I found is the same as my current engine (AP2 2.2 liter), but being a newer model (one year) it has a slightly different emission system, and I think Drive-By-Wire vs. throttle cable. The guy is willing to sell the whole kit-and-caboodle.

I wanted to be sure that using essentially the same engine, just different year, wouldn't affect the cars classing.

Thanks

All 2004-2008 AP2 S2000s are base-classed in TTC. Per section 6.6 in the Time Trial Rules, there is an update/backdate provision that allows the exchange of parts between different model years as long as entire assemblies are replaced, along with several other caveats. However, motor swaps are specifically excluded from this provision: "Motors and engine parts cannot be swapped under the update/backdate rule without the approval of the National TT Director." So, send an email to Greg Greenbaum asking if your specific swap would be permitted. It sounds like a reasonable request, so I'd ask before proceeding.

As a side note, how difficult is it to retro-fit a drive-by-wire system into an earlier AP2 chassis? Wouldn't the ECU need to be swapped and some major wiring need to be performed?

If the "long block" ie head to the oil pan is the same, then just use the old intake mainifold, electronics, etc. and not worry about it.

If you're going to convert it to the newer DWB stuff (which afaik with that engine/car isn't desirable) then just be sure the free mods cover you, otherwise you'll need to run it by Greg and/or take points for the different parts

^ yeah, just reuse your intake manifold/throttle body/etc from your current setup.

I looked into what it would take to swap over to DBW from an 06+ since I wanted the ability to do ECU tuning without having to take 3 points for it. The conclusion I came to was that it was not worth the effort.

Only swap in the longblock (head and block) and reuse everything else. Not only should you be able to keep your appendix base classing (IMO) but it will make the swap that much easier instead of converting the car to DBW.
