TurboShortBus Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Out of curiosity, do you have the ability to put that monster on a scale and weigh it? I have seen lots of speculation about its actual weight, but nothing definite so far. Mark Quote
wheelhopper Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 I would be interested. I am not interested, as I am sure you're not, interested in dealing with shipping issues. Are you doing any events at VIR or Summit Point by chance? I'll be at VIR in a few weeks and Summit in April. If you bring it I could get it from you there. Quote
Mystic_Cobra Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Wow for that price I'd take it and I have no use for it! Quote
snakebit Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Out of curiosity, do you have the ability to put that monster on a scale and weigh it? I have seen lots of speculation about its actual weight, but nothing definite so far. Mark Mark, Here are the weights of my 2000GT thru 3 different rear end variations. Variation 3 added a full cage with NASCAR bars both sides, so this info might not help much. All weights are with me (230 lbs.) in the drivers seat. Stock dash in all 3 variations. 1) Gutted interior, stock seats, stock 4 link rear, MM lower arms. 3/4 tank fuel. LF 965 RF 923 LR 699 RR 655 2) Gutted interior, stock seats, Griggs HD T/A, FAYS2 watts link, 3/4 tank fuel. Front 1889 Rear 1402 3) Gutted interior, Full cage, 2 Kirkey seats w/ harnesses. 03 Cobra IRS. FULL tank fuel. Battery relocated to trunk. LF 971 RF 873 LR 774 RR 793 John Quote
TurboShortBus Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 So, totals without driver are: 1) 3012 2) 3061 (+49 over 1) 3) 3181 (+169 over 1, +120 over 2) Stock seats are about 50 lbs each, and Kirkeys with brackets are 20-25 lbs each, so let's say 22.5 lbs/seat and call it a 55 lb weight reduction. 1 3/4" x 0.120" steel tubing is about 2.2 lbs/ft, and I am estimating my cage at about 140 lbs (although this can vary greatly). Say 6 lbs/gallon of gas x 4 gallons = 24 lbs. Backing out the additional weight of the cage and gas, and adding the 55 lbs reduction for seats, brings #3 to 3072, or +60 over #1. Miracerros.com claims +70 for the IRS, and I have read +90 on less official sites, so it is likely closer to +70 than +90, although we still have a few 5-10 lb variables involved. Now, to find a straight axle assembly to weigh to estimate shipping (if available)... Mark Quote

Think of it as free rear ballast as low as you can get that happens to come with better geometry! Quote

Mystic_Cobra Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I have a spare 8.8" solid rear (factory 96 Cobra w/discs) sitting in the garage. It wouldn't kill a bathroom scale would it? Quote

Definitely not, as my scale goes to 300 lbs. 2 of us picked up and moved a straight axle last year (I didn't think to weigh it at the time...I was too busy selling it), and neither of us had a struggle with either end. wheelhopper Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Like I mentioned earlier, I would be glad to take the IRS off your hands. The distance just makes the exchange a little more challenging. If you think we can work something out send me a PM. I am planning to be at VIR at the end of March. Quote

raypratojr Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 I have a nice electronic scale, but the irs is too bulky and awkward to fit on it. My dad and I struggled to get it in the bed of my F150. This thing is heavy as hell. I highly doubt anyone is picking this up by themselves. I have heard that they weigh 100 lbs more than a SRA. But, if youconsider the weight of a heavy duty MM TA and panhard bar, it might be comparable. Im actually thinking of putting it in my car. The thought of adj toe and camber in the rear is kind of sweet. Ray Quote
TurboShortBus Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Can you tell the condition of the spindle bearings (aka cross-axis joints)? Is the rubber blown out of them, or do they look OK? Also, which style of CAJ do you have? Reference material here: http://www.maximummotorsports.com/content/tech_info/rear_susp/IRS_Upright_ID.pdf Mark Quote
ac427cobra Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 A Cobra IRS weighs 289# less calipers, springs and shocks. FWIW Quote
TurboShortBus Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 A Cobra IRS weighs 289# less calipers, springs and shocks. FWIW I just bought a 1999/2001 Cobra IRS yesterday, and per my buddy's set of Longacre scale pads (we only used 2 of them), the entire assembly is 349 lbs. That weight includes rotors, calipers, and shocks, but does not include springs. Mark Quote
raypratojr Posted March 19, 2012 Author Posted March 19, 2012 I want to get this thing off of my driveway. Will deliver anywhere in the tri- state area. Ray [email protected] Quote
raypratojr Posted March 30, 2012 Author Posted March 30, 2012 Ok.... wtf. $300. I need to get this thing off my driveway. If i dont sell it for $300, its going in my car next winter. Yes, thats a threat! Ray Quote
