Hi all, I just bought a 83 Royale RP 33 Formula Ford. I'm about to sell my 83 VW GTI to help fund the FF. Anyway, I cannot find any info about NASA allowing open wheel cars in the HPDEs. I joined NASA to run the car in HPDEs, are they allowed?? PCA will not allow an open wheel car to run with them.

Yeaa! I got an email from Tom Hennig, and in fact they do allow open wheel Formula cars in the HPDEs, but only in level 3-4. You have to have some track experience before they let you loose! Thankfully I've been doing track events and DEs for 10 years and I CANNOT WAIT to try out the Formula Ford!

Personally I think it's a really bad idea to allow open wheeled cars out with HPDE. Keep in mind that in a formula car you're so small and low that most street cars won't be able to see you in their mirrors, especially if you're directly behind.

I very nearly had a coming together with a Formula Mazda that was out with us once. I got a blue flag from a corner worker at the end of a straight and checked my mirrors. The only other car I could see was a Camaro well behind me down the straight. A few corners later coming out of a turn I heard a strange noise so I backed off a bit. I just barely saw a little bit of the top of his rear wing above my window sill. The camaro driver said we came pretty close to getting tangled up.

It's dangerous. I complained about it. I think it's a really bad idea.

If you do decide to do this just keep in mind that most of the cars out there weigh 3x what your car does and they can't see you when you're close.

I know that in my Region (literally) neither we, nor most of the tracks we rent, will allow open-wheel cars on track with closed-wheels.

Contact your regional director - directly!

FYI, I've seen it done with EMRA TT events at Pocono, as well as the first Tri-Region SCCA PDE this Spring, also at Pocono, where the Danko Team tested its FA car. Can't remember if the Bayshore Corvair Association allows it at their Annual Pocono track event.
