NASA GTS at Autobahn Country Club - Race report for 7/14-7/15

If you missed the NASA GTS race at Autobahn Country Club this weekend, well, it was probably because you didn't have portable A/C. It was very hot and very humid with little breeze or shade to be found. We observed many competitors installing cool-suits Friday night in preparation for the heat.

GTS had the largest number of competitors of the weekend with over 18 cars entered. Leading Saturday's Qualifying was the consistent front runner, GTS5 #945 of Jeff Herrmann who looked to finally have some competition from a some Fall-Line Motorsports entries. Following closely behind were the GTS4 pack lead by the #33 BMW of Denny Pedri of the Great Lakes Region. GTS3 was led by a blistering lap by the #58 Porsche of Zach Hillman of 133.804, 1/10th quicker than the track record.

GTS4 - On the start #00 Von Sydow quickly outran Pedri passing for the lead on Lap 1 and set his sights on the GTS5 car of Herrmann looking for the overall lead. #312 of Alpesh Amin had a tough start and lost 5 positions immediately but worked hard through the race to gain back 4 of them before the end. #15 Chris Streit was on fresh tires and mission and passed Pedri on lap 3 under heavy braking and passed Von Sydow on lap 10 for the GTS4 lead. Pedri regrouped and passed Von Sydow for P2 a few laps later. Streit stretched his lead to 25 seconds which it turns out he needed. About 500 feet from the finish line on the last lap, Streit's battery shorted and blew the top off, killing all power. Streit coasted across the finish line and parked unceremoniously in turn 3 to be flat-towed to the podium.

In GTS3 Hillman looked to have the lead sewn up outpacing competitor #35 Dann Nelson by a nice margin. In a tragic turn, Hillman's right front ball-joint failed just after Nelson had fallen back 2 positions due to an off-track excursion. Nelson quickly regrouped, passed for the lead again two laps later and brought home the win.

On Sunday the GTS3 #705 of Roy Lipner showed us why he is a past champion and took the pole position from #189 of Luke Perkowski by 2/10ths. Three cars were DQ'd from Qualifying for missing impound so they would be charging up from the rear of the field, shaking up GTS3 for an interesting battle.

Streit led the field to the starting line followed mere inches by Jeff Herrmann who looked to be renewed and ready to hunt for the overall lead. However a failed suspension component put Herrmann out on Lap 1. Streit continued for the win followed by Pedri and Von Sydow. In GTS3 #18X rookie Stefan Sajic had an incredible first two laps moving from P4 to P1 which he held for the entirety of the race. #189 Luke Perkowski was close behind for 9 laps but lost power after running off-course to avoid another car. An amazing charge by Nelson who started from the back of 3 brought him into 2nd place only 3.7 seconds behind the leader.

Heh heh. Yeah, when he throws ~ 600 lbs of ballast in his car. I saw on his impound decal that he's 2360/328 = 7.2 = limit of GTS5 non-DOT

So he'd need to be at 328hp x 9.0 lb/hp = 2952 lb to be in GTS4 on non-DOT tires. Or disconnect a spark plug wire to make his car an Audi inline 5 cyl?
