rich Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Hello all, I'm brand new to TT and this is my first post. I've done HPDE's and plenty of AutoX in the past. Now I'm trying to get in to TT in the Chicago region. I'm hoping some people can help give me some tips on how future modifications are going to affect my classifiction in TT, and which classes I might be the most competitive in. My performance shop has proposed a couple of big modifications which I understand will require me to be reclassified by the TT Director (driveline swap and bigger turbo). I know the base class is TTD. I'm trying to go through the classification sheet to figure out what class I'm in now (I believe TTC, but this thing is a bit confusing!). Skimming through, I'm ballparking my points at about 30. Here are my current mods: -External wastegate, boost solenoid, catless exhaust, upgraded intercooler, fuel pump, retune stock turbo to ~21psi -BC racing coilovers (smaller than 40mm I believe, no external reservoir), front/rear swaybars, lateral links -Rear caliper reloaction (utilizing larger rear rotor), stainless lines, upgraded rotors and pads -UTOQ 140 Advan Neovas Future proposed modifications by my performance shop: -Complete driveline swap with JDM 6pd transmission from STi (brake calipers and hubs, resizing wheels to 5x114). -Power upgrade to ~330WHP (16G-XTR turbo, headers, TGV delete, E85 fuel mods [injectors, pump], intake) Sorry this is such a mess of a post. I guess the main question is this: If I swap the driveline and up the power to ~330whp with a bigger turbo, how will my car get reclassified (and is it worth it)? Assume stock weight ~3000lbs. Thanks for all the help. Quote
GAS Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Hi Rich, I am Geff Sawtelle the Midwest TT director. Have you run with NASA before? If so, at what events? To run in TT you need a TT license. They are not difficult to obtain but it is a "little bit" of a process. WE will be running at the AUTOBAHN RACEWAY in Joliet the weekend of September 15 & 16, I think. Check out the Midwest website for specifics. Relative to your car, my advice would be for you to participate in a NASA EVENT 1st, at which time we could go over the classing on your car. There are normally a couple folks at each event that run the WRX and you will find them to be invaluable as to what you might expect when you start heavily modding. Feel free to give me a call on my cell at 920-765-0215 (evenings work best) and I will be happy to go through the process with you! ENJOY THE DAY! Geff Sawtelle Quote
clydesdale Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I would avoid any further upgrades and do as Geoff suggested and get yourself involved first. Your turbo upgrade would most likely move you straight to TTS with the required reclassification-- I wouldn't recommend it. You'll need to get your driving in shape and then look at what the right upgrades are to make the car competitive. Below is an estimate based on some assumptions of the modifications you've already made (case 1); this would give a TTC class car. You will need to verify whether the wheel hub knuckle change would require additional points. Unfortunately it would not be competitive against the top TTC cars on R-comps-- that's my opinion but I think others would agree. The best way to make the car competitive would be to keep the points at a max of 19 and run R-comps (case 2). You'll need to be right at 3085 competition weight and be putting down as much HP as you can get with no or very few engine mods. Case 1: Subaru WRX 2.0L ('02-'05) (AWD) TTD 3085 +5 FI +2 A.4) Neova -4 A.6) 225 from 245 base (-20mm) -2 +1 C.4) Intake/Intercooler piping +2 C.6) Fuel Pump +2 C.7) Ported intake (tumble valve delete) +3 C.13) Wastgate +4 C.15) Intercooler +2 C.24) Exhaust +1 C.25) Cats +20 +3 D.3) STI Transmission +3 +3 E.3) Coilovers (non-inverted) +2 E.5) Springs +2 E.7) Sways +4 E.9) Control Arm/Lateral link +11 +2 F.1) Brake Calipers/Location +2 +39 total Case 2: Subaru WRX 2.0L ('02-'05) (AWD) TTD 3085 +5 FI +10 A.4) Hoosier R6 -4 A.6) 225 from 245 base (-20mm) +6 +3 E.3) Coilovers (non-inverted) +2 E.5) Springs +5 +2 F.1) Brake Calipers/Location (Dump this if you can and use +3 for exhaust and cats) +2 +18 Total Quote
Cooper93 Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 Best advice, and this is what I'm doing.... Return everything to stock. Keep coil overs. Get 225 sticky tires. The only way to get to competitive wt/hp (about 220ish awhp) is to put a turbo back exhaust on. Send a "have mercy on me" email to GG and hope you can lose the +5 turbo penalty. If you lose the penalty, this will leave 1 point to play with. After the 225s wear out, get 235s. Those will eat your last point (I think). If you have to keep the +5, keep stock exhaust and tune the best you can (prob around 190-200awhp at best) and drive your ass off. Ethanol MIGHT be the only way to keep the stock TD04 and get it to TTC specs (around 270ish awhp) but I can't see that tiny turbo lasting too long at that level. My 02 weighs just under 3200 with me in it(190) and 1/4 tank of gas. However, if you're nice enough to GG, he may take all your mods into consideration and give you a higher base class lower than TTS. Definitely talk it over with your regional TT director to figure out the best way to go. Jeff England will be hearing from me soon (he doesn't know it yet so SHHHHHHHH)!! Good luck with your build! TTD* +7 coilovers +5 225 BFG R1 +9 ----- 21 (not good) I'd hate to have to be stuck running NT-01s/RA-1s, etc if I got that reclass. It would seem almost better to just keep the +5 turbo penalty and be short on HP and try to make it up with grip. TTD turbo penalty +5 coilovers +5 225 BF R1 +9 ------ 19 With the stock exhaust, I "might" be able to get around 190awhp. TTD max adjusted is around 220 for the weight of my car. For S's and G's, how much difference is there between the NT-01 and the BFG R1 at a track like CMP? Worth it to run them and have enough HP instead of R1's and be about 30HP short? Quote

Cooper93 Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 Grip over hp at.CMP That's what I was thinking also. RA should be just the opposite. Quote
