sldghmr Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Looking to get on track for real this season. I've done HPDE/PDX's for the last 2.5yrs. Have advanced slowly, and methodically up to Advanced group in my little Focus. Now at the point were I'm killing the Focus (brakes, clutch, brakes, wheel bearing, pwr steering, tires, brakes), so I'm thinking... *** Time for a dedicated race car *** Started building my ex-drag 1995 Mustang into a road race machine when I found out that it didn't really class anywhere in SCCA (probably because I'd been looking at AI the whole time lol). At same time went thru Drivers School and got my Novice permit. Have decided that I want to go full bore w/AI or CMC. Had some hiccups w/my car. Talked to a few folks and did a lot of reading...took the plunge and bought a complete roller 2010 AIX car. Now, not looking to burn up the track in AIX (pockets are not THAT deep!!), so I'm hoping to be able to run in AI w/it and a stockish motor. But if I have to run AIX, so be it. I just want to get out on the track. Want to keep learning...progressing. So here's where I'm at, and questions to follow.... Should be getting car fired up in the next week or so... thinking I should have someone look at it as soon as possible to tell me if there are some major things I've over looked. Should i schedule a visit to official inspection shop? or try to find local AI racer to take a look 1st? or both?? Need to convert my SCCA Novice permit over to NASA. Do I need to do another physical??? (I like my nurse a lot, but not the Dr so much lol) Should I even try to run each and every event this year??? Summit pt is no problem but VIR is a monster haul, but I have done it a few times. Thanks for any input you guys have... Steve Quote
99cobra2881 Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Go through the GCR and the rule book for AI, youll have to use 2012 rules, 2013 rules despite no major changes still havent been released. The big items are safety related. Belts in date/installed per the rule book, right side net installed correctly, left side net in date, Hi-density roll bar padding around the drivers head, Head and neck device, sa2005 or preferably a sa2010 helmet, no holes in driving suit, socks or gloves, 2 layer driver suit or 1 layer with nomex underwear, 4 post Electrical cut off switch wired up properly with alternator field cutoff wires installed, Fire bottle or fire system installed. Look here and complete this before making an annual tech inspection appointment. This will cover most everything the tech shop will look for. http://www.nasaproracing.com/forms/annual_race_inspector.pdf You dont need another physical. http://www.nasaproracing.com/forms/non_nasa_medical_disclosure.pdf Other forms are available here. http://www.nasaproracing.com/forms.html Ive seen guys that run every event for a year or two. Most of those guys dont race anymore. Best of luck and have fun out there racing in 2013 Quote
kbrew8991 Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Haul around and see new tracks as you're able. You're there for the whole weekend after all, so a handful of extra hours round trip is but a drop in the bucket anyway. It varies person-to-person, but for me 6hrs is about the limit for a Fri afternoon departure & Sunday evening arrival to still be useful at work Monday morning. I'll do 8-10 every now and then though, but just take off Friday and half-day or more Monday. Again, ymmv depending on how well you road travel with a trailer behind you, you job, etc, roads in your area, etc. Also remember that this is all supposed to be fun. If trying to run the whole season year after year burns you out (either physically, mentally, financially, or a mix) then dial it back to a fun level. Quote
sldghmr Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 Thank you both very much... I definitely missed the 4 post electrical cutoff switch part . Driving wise, I tend to be good for 5-6 hours myself.... so I won't push too hard. I do want to keep it fun. Quote
