DISCUSSION CLOSED: Clarify side window exception

JSG1901

Type

Modification to an existing rule

Existing rule section (if applicable)

NASA CCR requires both right and left side front door windows be down or removed.

Proposed change

If GTS allows this or any other exceptions to the CCRs safety and tech regulations please put them in the GTS rules so both drivers and inspectors have something to refer to.

Or do not allow them to run side windows as an arbitrary assessment of access to the driver in an emergency and proper ventilation of the cabin should not rest on NASA inspections. We open NASA up to potential legal issues...

Reason

Arbitrary email distributed rules make it very difficult to enforce safety and competition regulations.

Proposed new wording

Up to you but it should include a specific requirement for labeling and easy removal as well as that it is the competitors responsibility to ensure the cabin is ventilated properly to avoid heath hazards to the driver and other compeditors on track (when the driver passes out from exhaust fumes)

For: Clarifying the side window rule to better outline safety, guidelines for tech, ect.

Against: Banning side windows. If you can figure it out, rock on.

Against allowing side windows (but for clarifying rules if unclear)

Unless some some drivers feel their car is particularly disadvantaged by having to run with windows open, not sure what is to be gained by allowing side windows. One less thing to buy or fab plus also doesn't cause any fumes issue, etc.

If you don't want it or don't feel comfortable doing it, skip it. But don't ban it for others to tinker with.

Allowed side windows by:

Changing glass to FIA approved material for side window replacement

if you have a FIA homologated chassis, I.E. Porsche GT3 Cup car, etc...

Be able to removed window from both directions (inside or outside the vehicle) by applying 20lbs of pressure.

Okay here is a good question for you guys, maybe something we can clarify in the rule.

I'm for the rule to clarify by the way...

Does the window have to be removable with the door still shut?

Does the window have to be removable with the door still shut?

I think that is the exact intention of the rule.

If it is not removable with the door shut and the vehicle is in an incident whereas the door is unable to be opened, how is any driver supposed to quickly and safely evacuate the vehicle?

What are the current exceptions allowed by the "unofficial rules" that seem to be in place?

Here's how we interpret it today: http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=55466

Thanks.

Yeah, I would say it needs to be written down in the rules so you don't get conflict from tech or other stewards.

I'm surprised NASA allowed this exception from their rules that are supposed to apply to all cars, but it is in line with some of the newer pro series that run windows, but they are running some kind of air conditioning, with a max cabin temp in the rules too.

You might also want to add something about adequate driver cooling as well as ventilation from fumes, and the egress.

If it is an advantage in speed, then someone might try and run them when it's way too hot.
