This car began life as a late model stock car built for short-track asphalt racing at Motor Mile Speedway and Martinsville Speedway. In conjunction with Patrick Henry Community College Racing College director Talmage Thomas, owner Butch Hamlet went about converting the car from left-turn only to a prime time road racer. Now optimized for Virginia International Raceway (VIR), it is a full-blown winning NASA Super Unlimited racer.

Examples of modifications done to this car include moving the engine back 5 inches, lowering the engine, modifying suspension to allow the ride heights to be much lower than normal, building stainless headers and totally removing all exhaust system except headers, lower numerous bolt on items, etc.The engine was built by, and is maintained by, Danny Glad. Danny was head engine builder in Winston Cup for Alan Kulwicki and Wood Brothers Racing. It is a nice compromise between maximizing horsepower and bulletproof reliability. It produces 640 HP and 550 lb/ft of torque at the crankshaft and 592 HP and 490 lb/ft of torque produced at the rear wheels.

After four years of development, the car is now fully sorted. It is on a seven-race winning streak in the series at VIR, and has won all nine races it finished. It took pole in all eleven races. Early in its development, it suffered two mechanical DNFs. The competition in the class includes a $400,000 Porsche GT3-R, Trans-Am cars, GT1 cars, Sprint Cup, Nationwide and ARCA cars, and a Riley and Scott Daytona Prototype. Twice in the series of wins, the car has lapped the field. In this class at VIR, 2:00 is considered a quick time. This car has run in the 1:50’s and a switch to radial tires should cut those times to 1:48’s.

The car is race ready and considering its prior success, the next owner should be in prime position to continue the car’s winning ways in the NASA Super Unlimited or have the loudest, baddest, fastest track day car out there!!
