Camping/Paddock logistics for Laguna.

Hopefully you guys can help me out. Although I took a racing school at Laguna a while, it was the only time I've driven on that track, with everything provided. Now, looking at the map, the camp site and paddock seems to all be located in different sites. I wonder if our campsite/trailer location is same as our paddock as in most tracks. Laguna seems to have a different layout to other tracks. Trying to figure out camp location and making sure I get to grid on time. Also, are the campsite on a first-come first-serve basis. Do the camp pass we purchase guarantee a spot, or do we need to reserve separately as we do at let say BW or WSIR.

Track is in a county park. Camping sites are outside the track area. They do tend to be of good quality. You are not allowed to camp inside the paddock area like at most tracks we visit. Also note the paddock area can be quite crowded for a race event. Not sure how you reserve camp site.

The event webpage https://nasaproracing.com/events/2083 lists 3-day camp-vehicle pass fee of $100, plus has a link at the top of the page to the event regulations at https://nasa-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/content/upload/5108/Regs_West_Champs2015.pdf. Paragraph 18 (General Facility Info) part 10 lists info on camping within the paddock, but I'm not sure how much space they will allow each competitor within the paddock.

As far as camping outside the paddock, I did a quick search, and http://www.co.monterey.ca.us/parks/lagunaseca.html has some basic info, and http://www.co.monterey.ca.us/parks/lagunaseca_rates.html with the linked fee schedule being http://www.co.monterey.ca.us/parks/downloads/MoCoParksFeeSchedule2014-15.pdf.

If you paid for camping through NASA then you will be dry camping in the paddock at your pit spot so your car will be in your camp space. Laguna has limited space in the paddock so being aware of your fellow campers/competitors is a good thing. It is usually organized by race class.

If you paid for camping through SCRAMP or Monterey County then you will be camping outside of the paddock but will still have a pit spot for your car and enclosed trailers. Open trailers are usually parked in a lot outside of the paddock.

yup, we'll be camping in the paddock as happens at all the other race tracks.

There are no power hookups in the paddock (unless you got super-lucky and happened to pit within range of the outlets adjoining the cafe). There's a free dump station just inside the main gate which is quite convenient to get at.

The campgrounds are sprinkled around the periphery of the track and they're quite nice - pleasant surroundings and they have power hookups and washroom/shower facilities. So if you have a big RV you might choose to get a spot in the campgrounds and do the three-minute commute down into the paddock area. If you're looking for somewhere to stake out a tent then the campgrounds are definitely the place to be.

I don't believe there's a website for reserving a campsite so a phone call will be needed. That page Jim linked to (http://www.co.monterey.ca.us/parks/lagunaseca.html) has the number.

  • 2 weeks later...

We reserved a campsite already just to have a spot to park our enclosed trailer since we didn't see any paddock assign. If we get a paddock we'll bring the trailer over to it. Driving from the campsite to grid sounded like a painful process looking at the map. Hope the process will go smooth, or at least we get something in advance in terms of how the process will flow for the paddock arrangement as we only have 2 weeks left.

It looks like Cybronetic is saying we can't camp in the paddock

We've camped in the paddock at all Laguna events I've been to except one (SpeedVentures). That includes the 2014 and 2013 NASA race weekends.

The event registration page (https://www.nasaproracing.com/events/2083) wants $100 for camping, saying "Any vehicle entering the paddock with a living quarters needs a camping pass".

The 2015 Event Regulations (https://nasa-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/content/upload/5108/Regs_West_Champs2015.pdf) says

Camping is permitted. No tent stakes are to be driven into the asphalt.

You must purchase a Camping Vehicle Pass from the NASA registration page

if you are staying overnight in the paddock. You'll pick this pass up

from Registration. This pass must be displayed on windshield or RV door.

Please note that Paddock Camping and Monterey Park Camping are different.

^^^ This.

I slept in my race trailer for two nights during the crossover event last year. No issues. But you gotta buy the camping vehicle pass.

Logistical nightmare if it's an unlicensed race car. I *think* the county gets a bit upset if you have a race car outside the paddock.

From what I have heard. It's ok. The last event NASA had there. A lot of cars were not inside the paddock.

I messed up and paid for both camping and a camper in the paddock. I have a email in to Will. But I am looking to sell my Paddock camping pass. It's sold out. So this may be good for someone.

That's good to hear. It seemed it was an issue when the other group had the runoffs there. I had friends paddocked outside and it was a issue trying to get cars back and forth.

We grabbed both to have the choice - Paddock camping and county camping. That way we can do campfires, etc. Growing up as a kid, that was the best thing about Laguna - camping up on the hill over turn 5 (was turn 3 at the time) in our motorhomes. Really looking forward to getting back there - I haven't raced there since 1998 or so.
