Another great AI/AIX/SI race weekend! Yes we had an AIX race on! Just something to get you excited for the upcoming NASA Eastern State Championships AI, AIX and SI race!

NASA Mid West and Great Lakes, American Iron, Spec Iron, AIX

Race Report - Gingerman June 27-28, 2015

A newly repaved track and cool weather where the recipe for broken track records. NASA Mid West hosted a crossover event with NASA Great Lakes at Gingerman raceway in South Haven Michigan. The track was repaved just 2 weeks prior. The old surface was very slick, ate tires and was very temperamental based on temperature and cloud cover. The new smooth grippe black asphalt really liked the Toyo RR.

In American Iron (AI) Leo Wanstreet lead the way with his gorgeous fox body Mustang. For Saturday’s race, Lakomiak got a great start ahead of the pole sitter Wanstreet with Davis and Sarsfield behind. Lakomiak move through traffic well to build up a gap, but a double yellow closed the field back up. Traffic was a factor after the restart and Wanstreet and Davis used it to get by Lakomiak on the inside of turns 8-9. Lakomiak got by Davis a few laps later by Wanstreet had built up a gap. At the end Lakomiak got within a second of Wanstreet for 2nd. Wanstreet got the win and the track record with a 1:40.263. Davis was 3rd and Team Sarsfield 4th.

American Iron Extreme (AIX) had a good turn out with John Miksula, John Jung and Jeff Henderson. For Saturday’s race, John Miksula was on the pole and had an early lead. But problems took him out of the race and Jeff Henderson got the win.

Spec Iron (SI) Audrey Zavodsky got the win and broke her own track record with a 1:43.460.

Qualifying for Sunday was the first session out at a very early 8 AM. It is also very important. We had 2 races scheduled for Sunday and qualifying sets the starting order for both races! In American Iron Leo Wanstreet again easily set the pole time with a lap in the 1:39’s. The rest of American Iron was back in the 1:4x’s. Jason Lakomiak was second followed by Todd Davis in 3rd. Team Sarsfield (Jerry and Mike) hit back luck again. They could not get back on track on Sunday. Hopefully, they can get there transmission shifting issues behind them and get back to showing the speed that had in June at Mid Ohio when they were on the pole. In AIX, John Jung got a good qualifying lap in and took the pole. John Miksula was second followed by Jeff Henderson in 3rd. In SI Zavodsky had a brake failure at the end of the back straight. She managed to scrub some speed in the sand and get the car turned around so most of the impact was at the rear. She was not hurt, the car was not too badly damaged, but the rear of the car was full of sand. She returned for the 3rd race of the weekend.

AI, AIX and SI where in the second green flag wave for the race start, but the second wave did not get a green flag as the race start was called off at starters stand. The first wave was under a double yellow due to a car off in turn 2. Next time around, the AIX cars of Jung and Miksula took off ahead of the pack. Jung and Miksula battled for the lead throughout the race. Fast lap for Jung was 1:37.890, fast lap for Miksula was 1:37.362!

In AI Todd Davis got a great start and moved in behind the pole sitter Wanstreet. Wanstreet was quickly in the back of the ST class. Davis made it about ¾ of a lap and realized that something was wrong with his left front suspension. Luckily, he make it back to the pits with and further damage. Wanstreet pushed his was threw traffic with Lakomiak following. Wanstreet and Lakomiak continued to battle throughout the race. Wanstreet never lost the lead and took home the win. He broke his own track record from Saturday with a 1:39.565! That’s 2.8 seconds faster than the old track record of 1:42.374 set by Steve Post in June of 2014! Lakomiak came in second only 0.359 seconds behind Wanstreet. Yes folks – that’s more very close AI racing!

For the third race of the weekend, in AI Lakomiak jumped out to an early lead and ran away for the win. In SI, Audrey Zavodsky was back in form and took the win. In AIX, it was Jung with the win and Miksula in second. The two battled for the whole race again.

This race report did not make Speed News due to confusion on how to submit and missing the deadline. (my fault)
