provisional license Eval

Can someone explain to me how the license eval process goes? I am signed up for the eval on Saturday the 19th at Sonoma and was told if everything goes well I will be allowed to race on Sunday. I am just curious as to how this eval works. I heard that an instructor would be riding with me, however my race car does not have a passenger seat.

I raced motorcycles for 20 years and also have been a licensed racer in NHRA however this is my first car road racing license. I do however have many years and hundreds of track days in the A group in my car.

So if someone who was in a situation similar to me can chime in on how the day went I would appreciate it.

I currently see that 8 people are currently signed up for HPDE-4 Lic-Eval on 3/19-3/20 at Sonoma per https://www.nasaproracing.com/events/2272/entry_list?direction=asc&sort=class. I'm not sure how many instructors they will have doing the evals nor how they will break them up for each session. When I did my license eval at Thunderhill, there were two of us needing the eval during a 20' session, and the instructor didn't ride in my car (which has a passenger seat), but instead was in another car behind me. The eval went really quickly, but I had been running in Time Trials for quite a while, so the instructor already had an idea of my driving style and if I was safe out on the track.

PS - you mentioned the 'A group - what organization is that? Have you run many weekends (including HPDE-4) with Nasa? - Jim

I have been running with HOD and NCRC but have ran with NASA HPDE4 as well. I was just curious as to how they do the eval. I spoke with Scott and he said that they will work with me.

I haven't run with HOD very often, but I've run quite a few events with NCRC in both their Open group as well as their Race group. From the events I've been at, it seems to me that the NCRC Open group is more polite/cautious and give more point by's than Nasa in HPDE-4 where I wouldn't expect any point by's. It is good that you've run some weekends with Nasa in HPDE-4. - Jim
