[Re-posted 07 09 2018]

With many new drivers working their way through the HPDE ranks with an eye on Time Trial competition, it is a good idea to establish and post the current requirements for becoming eligible for TT participation. Since there are various driver scenarios (starting with NASA from scratch, joining NASA from another organization, having a competition license, etc.), the most common driver entry levels are listed here for reference. Other scenarios and requirements may be added as they are brought to our attention by new drivers.

1. If you are advancing through the HPDE-1/2 levels with NASA, or if you transfer into NASA HPDE-1/2 from another organization:

a. Advance through HPDE-1 and HPDE-2 as necessary or required by your instructors and/or group leaders, then

b. Advance through HPDE-3 and HPDE-4 as necessary or required by your group leaders, then

c. Successfully complete a check ride with a NASA instructor.

2. If you transfer into NASA HPDE-3 from another organization:

a. Advance through HPDE-3 and HPDE-4 as necessary or required by your group leaders, then

b. Successfully complete a check ride with a NASA instructor.

3. If you transfer into NASA HPDE-4 from another organization:

a. Advance through HPDE-4 as necessary or required by your group leaders, then

b. Successfully complete a check ride with a NASA instructor.

4. If you have a valid competition license from NASA:

a. You may directly participate in TT with no prerequisites.

5. If you have a valid competition license from another organization:

a. Contact Jim VanderVliet (email below) to determine your transfer level (then see #1, #2, or #3 above), or

b. Obtain your NASA competition license (then see #4 above).

6. If you have an expired competition license from NASA or another organization:

a. Contact Jim VanderVliet (email below) to determine your transfer level (then see #1, #2, or #3 above), or

b. Obtain or renew your NASA competition license (then see #4 above).

Transfer levels (from other organizations) are typically determined by the Regional Director, with occasional input from other Directors. Please send your driving history in as much detail as possible to jim@drivenasafl.com for your transfer level determination.

Check rides should be requested in the 'additional comments' field when you register for an event, or via email to the Regional Director when you register. Check rides requested at the track or during the event may not be scheduled until the next day or next event, depending on available instructors and number of check rides already scheduled.

Once approved for TT, your first 2 days in TT will be your temporary/evaluation days. They are also required to be full (all available sessions each day, minus one), clean, safe days in order for your TT license to be approved (refer to TT rules at the link below). Failure to complete the 2 full, clean, safe evaluation days will result in a minimum of 2 remedial days in HPDE-4 before reconsideration for TT participation.

Disclaimer: Note that the above guidelines are only general requirements; they are at the discretion of the Regional Director, Chief Instructor, and Time Trial Director, and may subject to change either on a case-by-case basis or for all drivers.

Additionally, all NASA Time Trial rules can be found at this link: https://www.nasaproracing.com/rules. Please read them, as the almost all TT-related questions can be answered there.

Please contact Regional Director Jim VanderVliet directly for HPDE level determination and other clearances. jim@drivenasafl.com

Otherwise, please contact me if you have any TT questions. TTDirectorNASAFL@gmail.com

Thank you,

Mark
