Greg R. Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 Where will the CMC contingent be pitting this weekend at WSIR? Quote
NickS Posted June 4, 2002 Posted June 4, 2002 Hey Greg - Last year, we pitted up inside of turn 1. I'm going to ass-u-me that we're going to be pitting there again. What time are you planning on arriving on Saturday? - Nick Quote
Greg R. Posted June 4, 2002 Author Posted June 4, 2002 Hi Nick, We will be there mid day on Friday and will be camping at the track. Hopefully we can park the RV and trailer next to each other. I hadn't really planned on practicing on Friday; I just wanted to get there early (earlier than usual!) to relax some before the festivities. When are you heading up? Greg Quote
NickS Posted June 5, 2002 Posted June 5, 2002 Probably early on Saturday morning. I havne't finished putting the car back together just quite yet. If you get there early enough, couldyou rope off an area big enoughf or say 10 of us? I'm not sure the final head count, but it would be great if we could get everyone together. - Nick Quote
Greg R. Posted June 5, 2002 Author Posted June 5, 2002 Nick, I can certainly try to mark off some area on Friday. I would like to stay on level ground if I can find it. A lot will depend on how crowded it is on Friday. Don C. will be there around 8PM so perhaps between the two of us we can get a nice area for all. I will be on the lookout for the CMC family! Lady in Nomex Posted June 13, 2002 Posted June 13, 2002 No comments? Did no-one show up? Everyone showed up and their cars would not start? J/K guys! Anyone want to tell us about their weekend at Willow? Quote
NickS Posted June 13, 2002 Posted June 13, 2002 I dont have the official results yet, but it was definintely a fun weekend. I think everyone had a good time. It was definintely a long haul for a lot of people! I hope to have results up shortly. - Nick Quote
Richard Pryor1548534703 Posted June 14, 2002 Posted June 14, 2002 hi, Julie...since no one else seems to have time to post the results from Willow Springs, I'll attempt to fill you in. When we pulled into the Willow Springs pits (and believe me "pits" is a perfect description of Willow Springs' paddock area) there was a huge surprise awaiting us; the CMC racers there for the weekend included everyone in a NEW car. Ken Gronberg was there in a brand new 1995 Formula Firebird prepared by Joe Aquilante, David Weirich had a same year Z28 prepared by Joe Huffacker, Tony Guaglione had a brand new 4th gen. Camaro but he wouldn't tell us who prepared it other than a veiled reference to a performance run by some guys on speed in LA called the "Pep Boys", Jeff Trask pulled into the pits in a brand new Concepts semi and trailer rig and unloaded a hospitality set up that included a hot tub!, BBQ area, an air conditioner and mister, and a masseuse (a miss), and finally out of that shiny new transport rolled his old battering ram Mustang. Jeff apparently spent all his sponsorship money on the detail stuff and then ran out of $$$ when it was time to build a new car...couldn't even afford a new Earl Scheib paint job but he did have a pair of bumper stickers on the car that said, "I DON'T BRAKE FOR LOCAL YOKELS" (and if you remember this bit of local yore from the 1968 Trans Am season and Jerry Titus you're older than me). Jeff apparently landed a new sponsor, Jay Boobs, just before he quite the pro wars, so they came along to CMC. Jay Boobs owns a bunch of Hooters restaurants so Jeff's new pit crew was six of the Hooters babes in full (which wasn't all that much in material but was definitely full in other ways) regalia to service him...err, the car. One other new car making a debut at Willow Springs was Ben Pfaff and his Camaro-Mustang...taking the title of the series literally, Ben dug into his junk pile at the shop and grafted together a Camaro and a Mustang, justifying the car's legality with "hey the name of the series is the Camaro Mustang Challenge and as far as I'm concerned this is the only car that meets the rules and you guys are all DQ'e d and I win"....oh, that's right, Julie, you asked about the race. Well, it was the usual WS gorgeous weather, 120 degrees in the shade and there isn't any shade at WS....so while Don Campbell was on course qualifying the rest of us old timers met at the Trask compound and lazed in the hot tub while the Hooters babes brought us mind numbingly cold Margarhitas and spicy Buffalo Wings...best qualifying session I've ever had...while Don was burning up his tires, the executive CMC committee of Ben, Jeff and Tony voted to set qualifying times by a contest...all CMC racers in the hot tub would guess Bambi's measurements...closest to the measurements would be pole positition and so on...well, Perry Kincy won the contest, with Sam verifying the measurements as his duty as Chief of Tech for CMC (but Sam, is the proper tool for measurement really your tongue? I've never seen this used in any tech inspection before)..and the rest of us offering to be tech inspectors for the rest of the race weekend...when Don came in dripping sweat and trying to find the Toyo distributor we told him he'd be starting last, he just smiled and went to find a 2x4 for his front bumper....come the start of the race, everyone lined up in their assigned positions, the green flag dropped, Brandi (with an "i" not a "y", sweetie) dropped her top, and while the rest of us were caught staring, Trask led into Turn One...and Ben led into Turn 12. Now, Julie, I know this sounds strange but when Ben built his Camaro Mustang he used the parts he had at the shop and he had a front clip from a Mustang and a front clip from a Camaro, which made for a very unique CMC racer and after 8 margarhitas, an hour in the hot tub, and a rub down from Fawn, Ben just didn't know which end of the car to get into and unfortunately the Camaro part was facing T12 and that's the way Ben took off. Afterward Ben told me he really didn't notice anything unusual be until he came to T6 and encountered Jeff coming the other way. Figuring they were shooting another one of those stupid Cadillac commercials and he was mistakenly at Thunderhill, Ben pulled off track and short cut back to the hot tub, on the other side Jeff seeing the Camaro part of Ben's CMC rcer coming directly at him, figured it was Don trying a tricky start, and meanwhile back on the grid, all of us decided it was too hot to race anyway and when Monique waved her black and white top, we all figured that was close enough to a checkered flag and adjoured to Trask's hospitality suite to discuss the race over more margarhitas. But realizing that for the CMC racers that didn't make the weekend, we'd need to produce a story, Nick Steel agreed to make something up along the usual lines of a race weekend, however, Nick took off with one of Jeff's pit crew, Cindy Lou, and all we've heard from him is an occasional vague promise of a race report...so after your request, I could keep quiet no longer...that's the real race report....we decided to declare the race a tie and all racers would receive winner's points except Greg because he kept dumping his iced drinks on Trixie's front causing a condition Greg referred to as "speed bumps', but I digress....it was a fun weekend and it's too bad so many people chose to miss WS...but hopefully Jeff's wife will not have divorced him as threatened in the impound area and the Hooters Racing Team and hospitality suite will be at the next race at Thunderhill. See you there, Julie....Richard Quote
Greg R. Posted June 14, 2002 Author Posted June 14, 2002 Geez, Richard I didn't think you would tell everything that happened. What happened to the racer's motto "what happens at the track, stays at the track." It was a hot, WINDY weekend but by Sunday it was pretty comfortable really. We met some more CMC drivers and enjoyed their company on and off the track. The car ran okay and we were pleased with our results. We hope to be up front soon, but for now we are learning a lot and having fun. I look forward to meeting you Richard, you sound like a fun guy to party with! Greg #12 Mustang Quote
