1989 Camaros

Hello all, I ran across your site looking at CMC rules/regs. I've been doing HPDE this year,4@thnhll,1@sears. Some of you may have seen me w/ my fam. A green 4th gen v6 camaro #7 always.

Anyhow I need some help I'm a little confused about the regs. I found a cheap 89 RS 305,T-5. I'm thinkin this will be the one, after I throw a 5.7 in it. But I'm reading the regs and for those years(3rd gen) it only allows the 305s to be used. ??

How can the 3rd gen compete w/ the 4ths not using a 5.7,isnt that 305 @ about 170hp@fly,what can you do to this 305 to achieve around 230hp?and be equal in hp.w/ the others

I'd rather get a tpi 350 in it,can it be legal?

If you cant what do you do to these 305s to be competitive, near the 230hp limit?

And are they(regs) meanin Rwhp, or at the flywheel hp,B/C the 350 produced in 89, damn close to 230@ flywheel ,stock.??

Thanks for your time,and help

Hi Tony,

I noticed you were both at TH and SP. Congrats on thinking of a fun class.

My, and other, 4th gens run a restrictor plate behind the throttle body to bring the hp down. The 305s are plenty competitive. However it would be very difficult to build a car for the same price some of the available cars are for sale at....Several at 7500$.

Perry Thankx for responding, I do know that is more practical to buy the cars already prepped,I dont have 7,500$ cash.Wish I did I would,Hell wish I had 22,000 to get one of those forth gens for sale here. I can make one slowly,$little here$and there, over winter and next season practicing in Hpde.

In the regs, the hp limits on the models,is this rwhp?

How much hp are the 3rd gen drivers gettin outa the 305,w/ the allowed parts changes. ??

Thanks again,

Tony

My car is a '92, with the orig 305TPI motor in it that has 70k miles on it (65k of those are street miles. The last 5k have been race miles). With just ripping the smog equipment off, ditching the AC, and putting an underdrive pulley on, my car put down 229 - 230 rwhp, 291 - 293 tq at the rear wheels when it was dynoed a couple of months ago. Its a strong running motor. You should have no problems with getting 230 / 300 out of your TPI. Just strip the car and come out and play

Nick Thanks, that does help, but I made a mistake the car in question 89 RS has a L03 V8 TBI,it has what looks like a carb. on it. Maybe I should keep lookin, and get a 92 TPI.

Accordintg to the site above it has 170hp stock(my 98 v6,over 200hp btw)

So with the Edlebrock performer intake and cam, rippin out the smog,AC,K&N,balancing,no cats straight pipes. Could this motor get to 230hp???

What else could I legally do to help squeeze more out of it?? A good Pot&Polish would help alot.

Thanks Guys,

Hi Tony,

Be sure to read our rules before doing anything:

You could set your car up just like mine with the spec. GM engine option, your carb motor with Edelbrock Performer intake, cam and Holley #4776 600 cfm. This combo works really well on the track. I had on the stock Q-jet until mid-way through this season, it was terrible for road racing. The Holley works much better, in fact, many of us think the carb cars are the way to go for CMC.

Come talk to us at the races; we'll give you all the details you need. My best advice to you is to focus modding yourself (not so much the car) at this point. Spend your $ on HPDEs and get as much seat time as you can in group 4. CMC is about driving skill, not mods. This way racing is more affordable and fun for us. Hope to see you out there on the track!

Lady in nomex, Thanks for the reply. I printed out the rules about a 6 months ago,Thats kinda the confusion. I realize its about skill, and the moddin is for the AI &X. Which sounds very tempting, but I would like to get my feet wet in CMC.

I pretty much have been discouraged at the 89 RS,but it would be possible If I could put a LB9 TPI,Instead of the L03 TBI it has,

***This is a question for someone officially"Can I put a TPI LB9 305, Inplace of the L03 TBI 305 in a 89 RS camaro???. Same years, same application for Z same year.

There would be no gain over other cars same year "just equal"***

Lady in nomex I did visit your site,We have talked"I checked your car out" I believe Aug.3rd,I had blown my power steering and had to go home early(you said get a PS cooler,I did),I believe you were havin some of your own difficulties. You were very nice

I'm searching for a 93 camaro now,I am really kinda fond of that body style, good power too.. But the 89 hasnt been eliminated yet.I'll come talk w/ ya next I see you.
