Lady in Nomex Posted August 11, 2003 Posted August 11, 2003 Those of you at Reno-Fernley know I had an axle failure. I was surprised, along with many other folks, that a Dana 44 axle would break, even the stock one since it is so beefy. I just called Moser to reorder some alloy replacement axles and the total with studs and bearings came to $380. That is a reasonable price to pay to avoid what I experienced! A few folks thought I hit a berm, I did not, I was just driving along like normal on the back section and cranking along when bang! and my rear wheel passed me. My front end lifted, making me think for second I might be flipping. Forntunately the front end came down and I skittered along the track aways, finally coming to rest just off the track. I am hoping all of you will upgrade to forged or at least inspect your axles regularly for cracks. I was lucky my car did not sustain that much damage and lucky I was not racing - I was in a qualifying session and no-one was around me. Quote
Members Al F. Posted August 11, 2003 Members Posted August 11, 2003 Wow Jules...scary. How did it break? I mean, was it somewhere along the axle shaft, at the flange, at the c-clip? Does it look like a clean break or is there any evidence of twisting (very slight) before it broke? Its interesting, since usually you hear about this sort of thing from drag racers and off-roaders (high spike loads) as opposed to road racing with more constant loads. Quote
Lady in Nomex Posted August 12, 2003 Author Posted August 12, 2003 Hey Al, It broke at the flange. I have photos, just shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll send them to you. Looks like clean break. Quote

Lady in Nomex Posted August 18, 2003 Author Posted August 18, 2003 Randy's Ring and Pinion, where I get my rear end parts, carries Yukon. Already checked, none available for Dana 44 app in a car. Quote
Lady in Nomex Posted August 22, 2003 Author Posted August 22, 2003 Turns out the other axle was also cracked at the flange! Had the frame checked yesterday and it checked out ok. There's some buckling in the floorpan and some other bent up/cracked stuff. I think I am extremely lucky - coulda been much worse. Quote
rdracer Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 Listen to what the Lady is saying guy's ... it doesn't take much time to pull and at least eyeball those axels... I think Julie was very lucky.... Good Job Julie.... A good lesson for all of us .... not one of things we think about all the time... Julie... did it look discolored like it had be running real hot... I wonder if it had been shot with a Pyrometer if it would have shown a warning by being abnornally hot.... you can get a baseline for your wheel bearings and u joints and other things with a pyro.... it may help predict an upcoming failure. Just a thought Quote
