Kevin Hall
What's the hot ticket to keep from replacing windshields all the time? Ours has a big crack in it. Can we use Lexan?
Lady in Nomex
An account at the boneyard? No, we cannot use Lexan. Mike Plum is using some kind of glue on his windshield to help them last longer, hopefully he will post some details about that here. I was looking into NASCAR-type windshield tearoffs a while back, I think if we made templates for our cars that would be a good way to go. Kevin Hall
Thanks Julie. Good idea on the tear offs, maybe I'll look into that option, if Mike won't share his secret.
bsim
How many have you gone through Kevin? This is a new one to me. The only other time I've heard about cracking Camaro windshields was on 4th gen cars with gobs of HP and a 3 point strut tower brace, with the center of the brace connecting under the leading edge of the windshield. The flex in the chassis countered by the rigidity of the front end made bad things happen when all that power torqued the unibody. Maybe Tigger did it? fastjohn
Did you happen to find paw prints on the windshield?
Members Al F.
? Where have you been Brad? People crack windshields all the time. Its always from flying debris. 3rd gens seem to be particularly prone to it, but it probably only seems that way because we have so many more 3rd gens out there. Lady in Nomex
Brad - just get behind Ben Pfaff at Thunderhill in T2 and that will take care of your windshield question!
cmc38camaro
Kevin, The super secret glue I'm using is a windshield repair kit available at most auto part stores. I usually have one along and find that if I glue up any cracks or chips shortly after they happen it stops them from spreading. This obviously won't prevent the next piece of debris from taking out your windshied, but it extends the life of a damaged one. I'm running at a windshield a year pace. Oh, the other good thing about the windshield repair kit is that it good for at least 50hp. Mike
Kevin Hall
Thanks Mike. We appear to have 2 issues. The first was indeed caused by a rock at Buttonwillow. By the time we got home it had spread from top to bottom. The glue would have really helped that one. The second issue is the windshield cracked at the top, in two spots, this past weekend. Since the W/S is a structural part of the assembly I can see where maybe the strain we are putting the car through could cause it, but it seems odd I would be the only one. Especially since I'm not the fastest in the corners or pumping out the most HP and torque that would tweak the structure. I will pick up one of those repair kits. We must be in a glass vortex, I've had the W/S on my '86 Vette repaired twice in the last month! I think I'll buy my son a new W/S, and take the one out of his '90 RS convertible for our car when it gets too bad. Kevin

bsim
Where have you been Brad? People crack windshields all the time. Its always from flying debris. I guess one would actually have to be behind someone for this to be a problem then. Actually, I did get hit with a BIG something - I discovered it after I got home. Something hit my headlight area, and put a dent about 3" across and 1/2" deep into my nice new 16ga steel headlight plate. Yikes!
Kevin Hall
Uuuuhhh... I think if you have a crack from top to bottom that it's time... Brad, Don't you know the first law of British Car Mechanics? "It if works, don't fix it". Twenty years of TR3 ownership haven't faded. Beside, the windshield still works, and some of us look beyond the windshield when we're are racing. Kevin and Tigger
Adam Ginsberg
?Where have you been Brad? People crack windshields all the time. Its always from flying debris. Not always.....flying hoods tend to crack/destroy windshields as well.
Carson
add one more cracked windshield - side to side- to weekend damage report
Lady in Nomex
Carson, I can relate, and you have to watch these cracked windshields as heat from the car just sitting outside between races can finish the job! Now I go outside just to check a week or so before the race weekend just to be on the safe side.
Snakin
maybe you camaro drivers should try staying on the track ???? oops, that's gonna get me in trouble
Kevin Hall
We could say something about having enough clearance on the wheels and tires on our cars, but that would be just mean, so we won't. Besides, I think you can whup me off the track as well as on the track. I know, I'll point out that NASA seems to think Carson's Camaro won our race with the BMWs on Saturday, and mine finished second. It appears we finished more laps than the rest of the CMC cars. Members Al F.
I hear that rolling your car over onto the windshield has a tendency to break it too...just ask Perry and Ed.
Kevin Hall
BTDT-Parked my LUV truck on its roof outside of Julian, CA when I was 20. Really messed up the sunroof. I think I'll stick to breaking windshields with flying debris.
bsim
Well if certain un-named people would keep their cars on the track there wouldn't BE debris out there!
