rzaron53 Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Even though I have a car I still like to look through all the online classifeds mostly looking for that elusive 89-92 G92 optioned 3rd gen hardtop. During my search I ran across a '82 Z28 hardtop with a 4 spd manual. Anyone race CMC with whatever this 4 spd is (M21 or T10 im guessing? Anyone know?) or is everyone using the T5 in their 3rd gens? The reason I'm curious is that I've heard/read the T5 is weak and also when i'm on the track it seems like if I went down to the next final drive ratio I would never use 5th. I use it for about 3 sec now. Anyone know if there is a weight advantage? I'm not going to run out and put a 4 spd in my car or anything I'm just curious about what other people are doing. Later, -R Quote
King Matt1548534716 Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Trivia: Did you know that 82 was the only year of a four-speed with mechanical clutch linkage? That trans is either a Super T10 (good) or a Saginaw (bad--or at least heavier and not as good.) Both are heavier than the T5s, but the Super T10 is definitely stronger. That's what most of the A Sedan guys are running. Quote
rzaron53 Posted December 8, 2006 Author Posted December 8, 2006 Do the A sedan guys race with the mechanical linkage? My T5 is the first car I've worked on with a hydrolic clutch and it seems really nice. I have an M21 in my elco with mechanical linkage and it looks a bit scary to work on. I'm putting in a clutch over the winter and trying to fix the reverse lock out (and the main seal and all the rust holes ect, ect) so I will know for sure shortly. I know this isn't realated to CMC but if you were starting from scratch what 4 sp would you use? I've never really seen them compared anywhere but Ive seen racecars with M20's, M22's and T-10's so I assume they are all up for the task. How about a 4sp shootout in the next issue of hotrod? Quote

Super T10 if you're looking at a 4spd. Not only can you use the experience of AS guys, but also the ton of circle track parts. If I didn't already own 3 T5s, I'd be tempted so I could go score a cheap 5.5" -7.25" Quartermaster setup on ebay. We'll see how they survive next season in AI. Two buddies switched to TKO600s last year because they kept grenading T5s. Quote
King Matt1548534716 Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Another plus of the Super T10 is that you can still buy them brand-new in various gear ratios from Richmond, which bought the rights and tooling from Borg-Warner. I have one in my 65 Biscayne and it is a sweet-shifting transmission. Quote
raybob92891548534723 Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Dude, It seems like 99% of those 82 4sp Camaros were Saginaws and they are junk. I campaigned the super T10 in Tex racing form in my Asedan days and those trannies are almost indestructible. If I still had a 3rd gen Camaro and I was a CMC guy thats the tranny I would use. T5's are leight weight but IMO extremely fragile. I would also lose the Mechanical linkage the hyd. one works much more better!!!! My .02 Quote

Rolling starts wouldn't be too bad in this config but you'd get your head tore off on standing starts. jb Quote
