doug1548534725
Hi all, I'm going to take my first post and hopefully get all the dumb questions out of the way. I picked up Steve Graves' #81 Camaro off him, and hope to be competing (or at least driving) this season in So Cal. So let's get rolling with the foolishness: Is it legal to have 2 master kill switches? I see that the one accessible from the outside is required to be there and be labeled, but I'm considering one near the center console/shifter area as well, with some of the rewiring we're going to do. Would the second one need a kill switch sticker? If it was near the shifter, where would the sticker go? The fan at the moment is fully manual. Has anyone run into big problems running automatic fans? Has anyone rigged up a combo auto/manual switch? Is polishing/porting the exhaust manifold legal? Where do I get NASA, Toyo, and kill switch/fire extinguisher stickers from? Is there a standard sticker template for the "Camaro Mustang Challenge" for the windshield, or do I just get some normal stickers and spell it out? Some series' require that you buy the tires from a certain vendor. Do we need to do that, or can we get the Proxes RA-1 from anyone we like? Where do I get the car dynoed and inspected? I found references to "authorized NASA inspection shops" in the rules, but I could never find a list of these anywhere on the web site. I need to buy a HANS. I saw there was a group purchase a couple months ago, which is surely expired. Does anyone know of a group purchase going on now, or soon? GT4Point6
A couple of answers for you.... and Welcome to CMC. Where exactly are you located? Hi all, I'm going to take my first post and hopefully get all the dumb questions out of the way. I picked up Steve Graves' #81 Camaro off him, and hope to be competing (or at least driving) this season in So Cal. So let's get rolling with the foolishness: Is polishing/porting the exhaust manifold legal? No. Where do I get NASA, Toyo, and kill switch/fire extinguisher stickers from? Is there a standard sticker template for the "Camaro Mustang Challenge" for the windshield, or do I just get some normal stickers and spell it out? Kill/E stickers can be had at IO Port racing or a couple of other race parts sites. CMC banner, get from Tony as well as teh NASA and Toyo stickers. Some series' require that you buy the tires from a certain vendor. Do we need to do that, or can we get the Proxes RA-1 from anyone we like? Get them from the cheapest place you can find. Where do I get the car dynoed and inspected? I found references to "authorized NASA inspection shops" in the rules, but I could never find a list of these anywhere on the web site. Seven's only at Buttonwillow does the dyno and the inspection. I need to buy a HANS. I saw there was a group purchase a couple months ago, which is surely expired. Does anyone know of a group purchase going on now, or soon? Check with the place we had the GP at (http://www.apexperformance.net/), I think it's an ongoing thing. Ask for Linda I believe and tell her Tony set up the CMC deal.
Lady in Nomex
Welcome Doug! About the automatic fans, I have a combo switch that is auto but I can over-ride. That's the trick set-up! Look forward to seeing you on track!
doug1548534725
I'm in Rancho Cucamonga. Thanks for the answers, I'll track down the group purchase thread (I remember seeing it around here somewhere) and start getting some stickers together =)
Members Al F.
Doug Welcome aboard!! I've spent some time behind the wheel of your car myself...we ran it in an enduro at Willow Springs one night. You can have as many switches as you want, but there needs to be one obvious "kill switch" that is labeled as such and easily accessible by safety crews. The kill switch is there for their use as much as for yours. Its primary purpose is not to give you a convenient way to keep the battery from draining between events, rather to give crews a convenient way to shut the motor off and stop any electrical shorts while you're unconscious. If you go to Dynojet's web site they have a list of shops with their equipment. There's lots of them in socal so it should be easy for you to get a dyno certification. The annual inspection and signoff on your log book requires a NASA certified official to do it. Luckily all of your CMC officials can do this. Typically NASA SoCal sets up inspectors to do this during the first few days of the first race weekend weekend in Fontana as well.

Thanks for the answers, I'll track down the group purchase thread (I remember seeing it around here somewhere) and start getting some stickers together =) Brad and Nick may be able to let you know what shops in your area can do dyno's if you don't want to go to BW. All the ones in San Diego wanted an arm and a leg to do the three dyno's runs for some reason. BW also has lots of open testing if you need to get it on track. That's what I figured. I just wanted to be covered in case I for some reason was unable to reach the one on the left. Should be pretty easy to wire in, so I guess it's free insurance. I got my other camaro dynoed a few years back, and it was I think $50 for 3 pulls with O2, but that was part of a club thing.

The local shops wouldn't do a three run deal since I had to have specific items verified as required on the dyno sheet (fuel pressure, tire pressure, etc..) and the runs had to be at certain temps so they all fell back on the hourly rental fee and that starts as soon as the car rolls on the dyno. doug1548534725
Ouch! Another question regarding the dyno. According to the rules the dyno run has to be documented with the timing you used. Do people retard their dyno run a little to handle hot days during the season, advance it to take advantage of race gas at the track, or just time it to whatever the current conditions are on the dyno? King Matt1548534716
Total advance must be noted on the dyno sheet at the time of the certification. If you change it, you need to have a new dyno sheet. If at any time you are asked to verify your timing in tech and it doesn't match what's listed on your official dyno sheet, that could be cause for a DQ. It matters because a couple of degrees of timing can make a huge difference in horsepower. I almost got caught out last season when I bumped my timing 4 degrees and wound up with 14 more HP. Fortunately I made weight for the posted number by about 6 pounds. But at least I got a new dyno sheet out of it.
Carson
Welcome Doug ...a new socal guy YEA new MAN RULE.... no stuffed animals in race car like Doug's previous car owner 7's only @ BW dyno cost is one pull $45 then $10 each pull after that thats the time to adjust timing 34-36 on pump gas ..no race fuel needed best deal on tires were from chapman motorsports in AZ 480-694-1797 $156+15 shaved + 15 m/b= $186@ (no ca tax) we should call 'em in feb for a group buy oh yea . I would think one kill switch is enough you still have a ignition switch with your start button or standard key switch ignition that you can reach keep it simple.... Carson
in the above post I didnt mention that chapman brings those tires out to the March 16-18 cal-speedway in fontana and will mount+balance 'em there for you. but one must call ahead to make sure they reserve a set for ya
Tony G
Note: As of two weeks ago Brian walked out of Chapman Motorsports/BMW and is no longer selling tires. Tony

Right, but I mean, when you dyno it, do you do compensate for any race conditions that aren't met on the dyno, or is it pretty much the same? I'm sure I can find something local that's reasonably priced that can do it all for me. Thanks for the tip though, I will keep it in mind if I end up being able to use it.
