Alien Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Since it's looking like there's no way the ISAAC will be allowed, I've got a few quick questions about the HANS device. I've read here and there of people getting a new seat / harness because their current one wasn't compatible with the HANS. What is it that makes them not work? The seats I've seen that specifically mention working with the HANS, seem to suggest they are just more comfortable. Is there something I'm missing? Why wouldn't any 3" harness work? TIA Quote
gold chains and oakleys Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 I run a Racetech Seat and Hans..the first time I ran it, it was really un comfortable..The trick was to angle the seat (dropping the back of it down)..Since I have done that, it is much more comfortable..Seats that have a very narro; "Halo Section" may not allow the hans to rest on the seat when belted in, but my Racetech seat does have a "halo" and it does fit.. That is the only think I could think of... Quote
jeffburch Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 A 3" shoulder harness will work. The Schroth "for Hans" type harnesses are made to fit into the indentions of the device without riding up on the lip. Be carefull in your harness selection. Look closely at the CCR regarding harness widths. jb Quote
King Matt1548534716 Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 I run a Hans with 3-inch Impact belts and a Sparco Evo seat. Absolutely no issues whatsoever, and I think it took about half way through the first session I wore it before I forgot I had it on. I didn't have to make any adjustments to my seat position, which is already pretty upright. According to Hans, it's perfectly OK for the wider belts to ride up on the lips of the collar, although the 2-inch shoulder straps would lay flatter. Quote
7s Only Racing Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Seat manufacturers are makng HANS-compatible seats now. They have made the seats with a concave area around the shoulders to accommodate the HANS and increase driver comfort. Some of the seatbelt manufacturers are making 2" shoulder harnesses specifically designed for use with the HANS device so that it helps them stay on the HANS device. These 2" shoulder harnesses are legal only if you wearing a HANS device. I personally use the R3 from Safety Solutions that comes with a seat filler that goes around it to make it comfortable and fit in any seat and my harnesses rest on my shoulders in the traditional manner. The crash test ratings are excellent. Tom Dragoun Quote
rcpilot92 Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 From NASA CCR's: 15.5 Driver restraint system 1. All vehicles must have a five (5), six (6), or seven (7) point seat belt system. Arm restraints are required in open cars and cars with: Open T-tops, Open Targa tops, missing moon/sun roofs, or glass moon/sun roofs. 2. A five (5) point system consists of a three (3) inch lap belt, two (2) or three (3) inch shoulder belts, and a two (2) inch anti-submarine strap. Quote
7s Only Racing Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 Scott- All harnesses are to be installed and worn per the manufacturer's specifications. The Schroth 2" shoulder belts are to be worn only with the HANS device per the manufacturer. If there are any other manufacturers out there making 2" shoulder belts, we are not familiar with their specifications. Tom Quote

I was just posting that so folks would know that 2" shoulder belts are legal, earlier in the year some folks were saying the Schroth belts were not legal due to them having 2" shoulder belts. Thanks Quote
jeffburch Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 I believe what Tom is saying is if you switch to the 2" shoulder such as I did, it is now only legel with the hans. The hans must be worn at all times. jb Quote
King Matt1548534716 Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 If you read a bit farther into that section, it also states that 2-inch lap belts are legal with FIA-approved 6-point harnesses. Quote
