powerslide91
What is the current options for front brake rotors on 3rd gens? My car is already set up for 1LE brakes but the front rotors are trashed. I was planning continuing to use the 1LE calipers. Is there a set up to go to a hub / floating rotor that is CMC legal? I'd be looking for weight saving mainly. Otherwise I will just get replacement 1LE rotors. Same question for the rear brakes. Thanks, Jeff

Members Al F.
Check out http://www.metzcon.com/bigbrake/for a setup with a separate hub/rotor combo using LS-1 calipers and rotors. Essentially he uses 3rd gen rotor that has the brake surface machined off to create the hub. You could do the same and then have Wilwood or any other reputable brake shop make you two piece rotor/hat combo. For the rear you can certainly get two piece rotor/hats though there is less to be gained here for the cost since the rear rotors are pretty small anyway. bsim
Hmmm, I thought the 1LE (and Baer kit) already were seperate hubs/rotors? Meaning that you can change rotors without re-doing the bearings. Or am I missing the point of the question (i.e. 2 piece rotors)?
powerslide91
The 1LE parts on my car are a 1 piece hub / rotor. The rotors are trashed, so I was thinking of just upgrading to a 2 piece setup to save some weight. But in looking at prices, maybe it becomes an upgrade for next year. I'm not sure on the prevailing thoughts on the size of the brakes. I was under then impression the 1LE calipers would be fine for CMC. Part availability aside, does that seem to hold true? I thought the main reason cars are converting to the C5 / LS1 setups was cheaper parts. Jeff
bsim
The 1LE calipers are the "common" PBR calipers that GM/Ford/Baer all use. The upgrade from "base" is that they are a dual-piston caliper as opposed to the single piston (10.5") setup. For a 3rd gen, I was recommended to (and did) just get the Baer Sport system and was done with it. C5 and LS1 are a different animal. Members Al F.
All of the brakes CMC allows are compromises...they focus on easy and cheap. The 38 or 40mm PBR/1LE/Cobra/C4 calipers are just fine. You hear fewer 3rd gen guys grumbling about brakes than any other platform...but that might just be because they've got bigger problems!!
