Late last year I was ruined for life - in the good way. I began autocrossing my 06' GT and attended my first open track event. I've caught the disease.

I'm currently shopping around for a fox body to begin building a CMC car. I intend to spend this year progressively preparing the car, as well as getting the necessary experience to apply for a competition liscense. My plan is to be fully prepped personally and equipment-wise for the 2008 season. In the meantime I have a bunch of questions. Any advice and tips as far as what to adress and in what order would be much appreciated.

1. GT-40 components - ie iron heads, roller rockers, pullies - all the 93' Cobra stuff. Is this legal being that it is oem? I have the heads and rockers in my garage

2. I'm very interested in an 86' SVO I found that has been converted with a 87' 5-liter motor, dash , and rear. Will the SVO hood and rear wing(s) be legal?

3. Seat - guys already using a HANS device - is a "HANS compatible" seat needed or is it a new hype? i will be getting a seat with the side-impact restraint/pads. What seat is working best?

4. obviously not really a power enhancer, but are forged pistons and 3/8 rods bolts ok? I intend to put a fresh motor together and i'm just concerbed with reliability.

5. Brakes - what would be a good entry level setup that will not break the bank?

For right now i'm really looking for what things I need to do in order to have a safe and reliable car. I am willing to sacrifice performance for now in the interest of cost effectiveness, but I don't want to hurt myself or another driver, and I dont want to break the car every trip out.

Sorry for the long post. Any help and wisdom you guys can share is greatly appreciated.

The GT40 parts are legal for 2007, as the 93-95 Cobras were allowed into the class. You can mix and match any of those parts under the update/backdate rule, but you will still have to meet the 230/300 limits. Forged pistons are legal too, as they also were stock on 85-92 HO engines and as long as they are a replacement-style flat-top, you can use them. On the rod bolts, 3/8 bolts won't work in a stock 302 rod, so you would need to upgrade to an aftermarket rod to do that, which is technically not legal.

Get a good FIA-approved head containment seat like a Racetech, Sparco or Recaro. They will all work with a HANS and meet the new side restraint rule for 2007. A good seat is expensive, but it is money well spent IMO.

The best Fox brake setup is the dual-piston 94-04 Cobra/Mach 1 PBR with rotors cut-down to 12 inches and a modified mounting bracket from Baer. You can get the parts for about $500 plus whatever it costs to get the rotors cut.

SVOs are not on the approved car list for update/backdate of body components, so I think you are out of luck. You could either change the hood and wing, which would be pretty easy and cheap with junkyard parts out there, or ask for an exception to fun run at least until you got them changed out.

the wing would be legal ifit meets the limits set forth in the CMC rules.

8.5.4. Any rear spoiler (rear wing) may be used. The rear spoiler shall not protrude beyond the overall outline of the body when viewed from above perpendicular to the ground. Excluding endplates, the spoiler shall not be any taller than 11†from the deck of the car. The spoiler must fit securely with minimum modifications to the body and not significantly obstruct the driver's vision.

I'm not sure that it would. First, it's a two-piece design, and depending how you define the car's "deck" it's probably more than 11 inches off that surface. I doubt there is any competitive advantage to it either way.

i'm not familare w/ the SVO stuff, just pointing out it could be legal. by your reply i took it as it being an SVO wing made it illegal.

thatis all, carry on.

I was concerned about the wing also being that it would be more than 11 inches but it's also oem. I doubt at these power levels it would have much advantage - it's just one more thing to have to change. I'm concerned with the hood as well because even though it's oem it would provide a slight ram-air effect with a carburetor.
