CMC-2 brake rule update

You'll notice today an update in the tech bulletin for CMC-2 brakes. This is a result of many discussions with a lot of people, thanks all of you that were involved for your input.

The goals for the new brake rules include:

- not forcing currently legal cars to "dumb down" their stock brakes

- enabling brake systems that will increase on track safety and dramatically reduce maintenance cost/time, failures, and lost track time

You'll notice we've left this fairly wide open. The reason for that is to allow drivers to choose the level that is sufficient for them. Remember that brake distance is not determined by the size of your brakes, rather by your tires and suspension. If you can lock up your brakes on the last turn of the last lap then you are really not going to get any better lap times by putting on giant rotors and huge calipers.

Brake fade, resistance to failure, and maintenance cost are all more directly impacted by the size/design of your brakes and it is here where we're looking to mage gains by having brake components that are cheaper and will last much longer. There are many options out there that are very reasonable, so there is no need to throw excessive money at your brakes.

Also remember a proper brake system is made up of many parts that must work in unison: master cylinder piston sizes, rotor diameters, caliper piston sizes (front and rear). All of these must be balanced to have an effective system. Before you run out and spend money, please consult with someone experienced in braking system design.

This initially came from several calls and responses by some new guys that are building CMC2 cars and also some current CMC racers that are thinking CMC2.

Remember this is only for CMC2.

I think this is a great leap forward to save some really good bucks in the future of this series.

We looked hard at this and spent a great deal of time on it, so as you can see we really do listen and want the best for the series as a whole.

Thanks,

What brake setups are behind this rule revision? Curious about brands and costs. I will be running CMC-2 and have the normal LS1 brake setup.

Thanks,

Bryan

There are quite a few companies offering bolt on kits that meet the CMC-2 rules. By no means a complete list, but enough to get you started seeing the kind of options out there: SpeedSpecialty, Revolution Brake, StopTech, Baer, Pro Stop, BigBrakeUpgrade, Wilwood, thebrakeman, etc.

The driving factor was allowing changing from a production passenger car based two piston caliper to a racing style four piston common to circle track racing (Outlaw, US Brake, Wilwood, etc) which are readily available for under $200, and use pads that are both thicker and cheaper than ours are.
