Chevy flywheel bolts

I think I'm missing something here.. I'm looking for an ARP flywheel bolt set for my 305, and ARP has 2 products listed.

One is a regular bolt set, 1.000 inch UHC, 7/16-20 bolt with a 3/4 inch head

The other is labeled as for a 1-piece seal, 1.000 inch UHC, 7/16-20 bolt with a 5/8 inch head.

My question: Why does the head size matter if the bolts come trough the flywheel before bolting to the crankshaft? The "correct" labeled ones for the 1-piece seal (which I have) are $22 and apparently impossible to find, where the generic ones are $8 and everyone has them in stock. No other bolt manufacturers seem to make this distinction.

The bolt circle on the one-piece crankshaft flange is smaller than the older two-piece style (3.00 vs 3.58 inches), which would explain the use of smaller bolt heads to maintain socket clearance. But you might actually be able to get away with using either size.

The reason other companies may not offer the two sizes is because many aftermarket companies do not go through the effort to get things right like ARP does. They are a top-notch outfit and it shows in the quality of their products.

I couldn't find a set of flywheel bolts in time when I was putting the T5 in my car, so I went to the specialty hardware store and got Gr8 7/16" bolts with some star washers.

I believe they had a 3/4" head on them. I believe my spares are the cheaper ARP bolts as well (ordered them in case the hardware store ones didn't work out).

Matt is correct on everything though.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the "correct" ones.. I'll have to see if the bigger head would make any difference at all when I'm putting it together.

Engine rebuilt, and awaiting installation. I just may make the next event!
