Third Gen + carb + carb spacer + air cleaner?

I am having a heck of a time finding a usable air cleaner that actually fits my 305 carb camaro after we installed the one-inch carb spacer. The 4 inch tall circular drop filter I have is too big, and if I get the 3-inch tall filter instead, there's barely enough clearance for the carb to let any air in (see choke question below). Does anyone know of any snorkel-type setups that fit these guys that have a reasonable sub-2 inch vertical clearance or so?

The 4 inch drop filter was perfect before the 1-inch carb spacer was installed.

I'm looking for something sorta like this: http://www.knfilters.com/Racing/plenum.htm, but maybe a little shorter, a lot wider, and not $250 retail. Any thoughts?

Also, the rules specify that it's legal to remove the choke-related parts from the carb. Can we trim the metal fins that protude upward that are there for the choke (and wouldn't be there if there if the carb was sold without a choke), or does this rule apply only to things that can be "unscrewed"? Those fins are really going to be in the way of any slim air cleaner I can find.

Doug,

Have been there and spent all the money. No spacer fits with the hood.Above or below the carburetor.I'm running a coleman drop base air cleaner to clear the linkage at the bottom. The top will not fit with the hood.I run a 3"

K&N with their full flow top.Raising the hood hinges to clear does not work. The hood wants to blow off at high speed.Call me if you want to.

Thanks for the response. We dug out a pile of parts we're going to try with this weekend, again. If it doesn't go, we'll take the spacer out.

It looks like cutting the choke flue off is legal, so that should help a little. I'll let you know if we figure it out!

I think it does vary by each car how tall of spacer you can use. My third gen Trans-Am could use a 3/4" if I remembered right.

Ok, couldnt find the thread because it was an email...from mid 2005. I believe the discussion then and your post are talking about the same thing: the rectangular-ish metal choke horn. This doesnt unbolt, it would need to be ground/cut/milled (or you can buy a carb with it already milled off nicely...for about twice as much as a non-modified carb) and it is not legal to do. I could be wrong in what we were talking about then Vs what you're describing now.

Give me a call if you want to get into the details.

May be a silly suggestion, but had the same problem on my stock car and replaced the lid with a K & N filter top, did not hurt he HP.

I mailed Al, hope to get this figured out soon.

On a related note, we did get a Moroso drop base and a K&N 2.8 inch tall filter to fit just *barely* with about 1/4 inch between the filter and the hood. It took some slight bending of the Moroso base to clear the screws on the carb, but not very much. This is all with the full 1 inch carb spacer.

Looks like Al's email is broken!

Doug,

If it's that close, keep a watchful eye on that air cleaner stud. My carb buddies out here seem to have problems with them from time to time. I had to use an easy-out (which they bring because they've needed it before and not had it...) to dig one out last fall at Road America.

I can't remember the size of the stud off-hand, they drilled and tapped all the carbs for a larger size BOLT (1/4" or 5/16" IIRC) after one guy stucked the stud into the motor

Answer: the intake system for air/fuel that will be on the winning #27 CMC Camaro at Sears Point in a month, driven by Dave Schotz, unless it sells first. or it can be YOU in the winners circle if you write me a big check before the race...RP
