Keith
Section 8.4 of the 2008 ruleset states that update/backdates of body components are permitted within certain groups. Item 9 within that section lists 1993-2002 Pontiac Firebird (all submodels eg Formula, Trans-Am, WS6, etc) are considered a group. Earlier this year, I purchased a street-driven 1997 Trans Am WS6 and to my surprise, the hood is made of plastic not steel. My CMC Firebird has a steel hood. Assuming that the existing, legal air intake is retained on my 1995 Firebird Formula CMC car, would I be permitted to "update/backdate" my 1995 Formula to use one of these plastic hoods (assuming OEM of course)? ...on a constant quest for weight savings... Glenn
that hood is fiberglass, not plastic. and yes its legal. i've also been told they are about the same weight. the steel hoods are cheaper to replace, thats why i stuck w/ my steel one anyways. if you learn something different let us know. Sidney
Not to hi-jack this thread but...the hood that came on my 3rd gen Firebird Formula is ALUMINUM. What models was this available on? Sidney AI #
Keith
Glenn - according to some cursory checking, it appears that the weight difference is 6 lbs. I need to confirm this. That is a well-placed 6 lbs, IMO. Sydney - Not sure about the AL 3rd gen hoods. In fact, I didn't even know that they existed.
Lady in Nomex
Not to hi-jack this thread but...the hood that came on my 3rd gen Firebird Formula is ALUMINUM. What models was this available on? Sidney AI #64 Here's what I was able to gather from Thirdgen.org Some 1982 Trans Ams with the power bulge hood and '91/92 Fireharks got an aluminum hood. Its still not determined why some '82 T/As got the aluminum and some got the steel. It probably has more to do with when the car was built and what the factory had on hand at the time. The aluminum hoods typically have a big "A" stamped on the underside next to the part number but not all did. Its best to take a magnet to check if its steel or aluminum. Finding an aluminum power bulge hood usually involves a good amount of luck.
Keith
WS6 fiberglass (plastic?) versus steel Firebird hood weight is a 6 pound difference. Not alot but a weight reduction high up on the nose of the car.
