doug1548534725 Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Has anyone tried 4.10 gears with the .83 5th gear in a carbed third gen camaro? I've never been to Thunderhill, so I'm not sure how it will go there. My main worry was running out of top end at California Speedway, but we're not there this season, so no need to worry about that! The reason I ask is that we're swapping out the welded 9-bolt (impossible to find parts for) with a Dana 44, and that's what's in it now. If I spend the money, I'll probably go for the whole shebang (3.73s with the T2R), but I'm wonder how it will act with the current ratio and the Eaton limited slip. Quote
Lady in Nomex Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I ran a Dana 44 in my carbed third gen, you are very lucky to find one of those! I ran several different combos for gear ratios. The rear end came with 3.92s, those were miserable. I had 3.73s if memory serves and liked those the best. I also tried 3.54s, did not like those. Be sure to replace the axles with forged as the stock Dana 44 axles are weak at the flange. Do a search on here to learn how one of mine failed at 100mph! There is no T2R to my knowledge for the Dana 44. I tried several limited slips and was not satisfied with any of them. Ended up with a Detroit Locker which worked great after adjusting the suspension to accomodate it. I have heard there is a road race version of one of the limited slips I tried, the Truetrac. One person I know has tried that and did like that version. The stock version sucks. Just FYI! Quote
doug1548534725 Posted December 30, 2007 Author Posted December 30, 2007 What was your biggest problem with them (besides the failing axle? Did you run out of gear, or was it just too much shifting? The power band seems reasonably flat, so I'm not sure if I'm going to get much besides a quicker launch out of them. What 5th gear did you run? I do like not revving as high as some people state they do, so maybe I can keep the revs lower with the 4.10s but still not shift below the power band when I upshift. Quote

Lady in Nomex Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I ran out of gear with 3.92s, 4.10s would make that worse. Most carb 3rd gens are running 3.73s- those seem to work best. You should be shifting based on what your dyno sheet says. 5th gear was stock. I think the hot set-up for you would be a modern carrier 10 bolt and a T2R with some forged axles. Superior axles are a good choice for those, I had cracking problems with Mosers. Quote
Tony G Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Hey Doug, Julie is right on the money here with all of her comments. Dont even try the 4.10's I did that and it sucks! 3.73 is the way to go. I'm using a detroit locker in my car and I love it,but some peole would probably not agree with me on that since it takes some getting used to. Myself, its the only thing I would run since I tried everything else. T2r's are great too. Tony Guaglione Quote
