Oil Catch Cans

I am a little confused as to whether I need to plumb a catch tank or not.

8.19. Catch Tanks

All engine breathers and coolant overflow lines must vent to a catch tank of at least one U.S. quart capacity.

Catch tanks may not be mounted in the passenger compartment. An engine vacuum breather that passes through the catch tank to the exhaust system or vacuum devices that connect directly to the exhaust system are prohibited.

I have a 92 Camaro with the TPI. As such the PCV system is in place. Is there a need to plumb catch tanks?

if its all stock, then no. but it says all breathers must exit to a catch tank. that leads me to think if you have a valve cover vented w/ a small breather or something, it must go to a catch tank first.

or course you knw the radiator overflow must also vent to a tank of some type.

Yes, the PCV system is stock and there are no breathers on the valve covers. The radiator is connected to the stock overflow tank. Although large, the weight is no different than the niffy overflow tank I put in from Summit (that proceeded to leak and overheat the motor).

Should breathers be added to the valve covers?

Leave it the way the factory designed it and you will be fine.

Sounds like you have it right the way it is.

TPI car right?

Depends on how tight the rings are.

Tight, you're good with the stock stuff.

If it starts to loosen up, you may get oil regurgitating up to the throttle body where it draws filtered air.

Cap it at the TB and let it draw air thru a catch can with an old Chrysler style breather cap.

HRPworld has a couple.

The other side with the PCV leave alone.

Or, re-ring it.

Thanks for that idea. It is brand new motor. Well actually a combination of my old motor and new long block (a very expensive lesson). So the rings are good.
