GT4Point6 Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I'm looking at giving it a try next month, IDPA to start with, any suggestions or a newb to competition shooting? I've read a few things on the net and some good idea's but open to any suggestions. I'm gathering reload material as well, just need primers and we'll be making our own. I'll be shooting a Sig P220 45ACP. It fits in the SSP catagory and I'm getting another P220 tomorrow that is all stainless so the weight will put me in DSP or ESP, will weigh it when I get it home. Thanks, Quote
powerslide91 Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 I've started running matches earlier this year. Be careful, I've gotten myself very hooked... Biggest thing is in my mind is don't look at times or worry about that kind of stuff to start. Focus on the fundementals and get the mechanics right to start with. The first match I went to, while milling around before things got going, I overheard how a guy last month put one through his own thigh I didn't want to be that guy. Practice and get familiar with whatever your setup (holster and mag pouches) before the event. Practice your draws and reloads on an empty gun. I was worried about understanding the course and types of targets. Like autocross, it looks tough at first, but you get the hang of it pretty fast. Watch others before you go, so that will help. As you already mentioned, do some basic reading before and you will have a good enough grasp on the different types of targets. Like the car crowd, identify yourself as someone new and plenty of folks will help you out. Quote
powerslide91 Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Forgot to mention; you might have already found it, but I thought this was a good forum to get info from. There is a "what to expect on your first match" thread. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?act=idx Quote
bsim Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Hmmm, I think I'd prefer a 38 or 9 for competition, but if the other guys in that group are 45 also, no biggie. I'm only familiar with production groups. BIG California forums here, with a dedicated match sub-forum. I think you need this. Quote
GT4Point6 Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 I took Penny to the range the other day and she shot and liked the Sig P226, 4.4" full size 9mm. She seen one today in the store that was a Sig P229 (3.9" barrel) and two tone (unfinished stainless slide, nitron (black) finished frame and I may put it on layaway for her, or errrr me and the IDPA or for her, ya, that's it, it's for her (keep telling myself this over and over and over). CDP is for .45 only, mostly 1911 models from what I've read but will see this Sat when I go to the local shoot and check things out. I can shoot the P220 Equinox in ESP, SSP or CDP. The new stainless will only go into ESP or CDP due to the extra weight. Since I'm going to start reloading soon, I'll be able to make a round fit the gun and me for best results. Like racing, I'm going to shoot what I got and go from there and work on my skillzzzz I just picked up this gun today, P220 Railed, All stainless, 45 ACP, Signite sights, Hogue grips. Cleaned, lubed and ready for the range sometime this week. Quote
Members Al F. Posted July 22, 2009 Members Posted July 22, 2009 First vehicles with no emissions controls and economy measured in single digits, now firearms? Kevin, you're going to have your Ca residency revoked if you're not careful! I know, I just cant resist Jeff, very cool! I'm going to pick your brain next weekend Quote
GT4Point6 Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 If your on the fence, go to one of these matches with your gun(s) and ammo. I had a blast and they helped me out a lot. Not to many points down for me, and only two "misses" on targets without reshoots both were single hand shots, one strong one weak on steel plates. Had three mags that were not fully seated and of course fail to fire following. Tap, rack, bang. Strictly operator error on the mag seating. Some of these regular IDPA guys/gals are unbelievable shooters. Scores should be up in a couple of days so I'll see how I compared to the other three newbs. Some guys had revolvers in the other group, man that would be a tough one even with speed reloaders. I was a revolver man but my new Sig's are changing my mind. Still love the revolver though. Next time I'm taking my video camera so I can critique myself on the weapon draw and other procedures. Quote
