ShadowLight Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 This would be the perfect POS for a CMC car I am thinking: http://austin.craigslist.org/cto/1408094260.html It runs and is ugly as hell. If I were to budget another $1000 to get it in race shape driving wise. What else do I need to budget to get it competitive? Quote

bsim Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Another 2-3K and you're racing (safety items). "Competitive" is another can o' worms altogether. Quote

You can definately do it for less than 10,000. I think you could get there for around 5000. You could start out just by putting in a cage and getting the necessary safety equipment, and then build it as you go. Bryan Quote
ShadowLight Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 Sounds like I should just keep saving and keep an eye on the classifieds for that kind of budget! Quote
Members Al F. Posted October 17, 2009 Members Posted October 17, 2009 Although cmc is close to as cheap as you can get in the racing world, it is still racing, so it is not "cheap". Initial costs have to include much more than the car: driver gear, tow vehicle and trailer, tools, etc. Then you have to keep in mind operating costs, which should be aroun 5-600 per weekend. But don't let that scare you. Come out to a race, meet everyone, check out the cars in person. Then decide how to go about it Quote
G_Lemke Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I think you should talk him down by $200 and enter that car here: http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/ Gary Quote
KiMifan Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 It may run, but with a car like that, be prepared to chase gremlins and find the weakest link parts every time you take it on track. It can be very frustrating to run a car like that and in the long run, it can really hamper your development as a driver if you are constantly losing track time fixing the car. You get what you pay for in life and especially in racing. Quote
Alien Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Budget the cam/intake/carb in there too. That motor in it's prime was prolly 160hp. A set of 16's (and TOYO's of course) should be able to be picked up for a few hundred for the wheels. Quote

Then decide how to go about it I'm quite aware of how great CMC is, I've been running HPDE for a few years now and I'm very stoked to get a dedicated race car. Just getting my plan together for my entry in to the scene! I like the Lemons idea! Quote
