Quick rules question - 3rd gen & ls1?

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

In reading the rules, i was not clear on one thing. Can i run an ls1 in a 3rd gen camaro with a restrictor?

I saw a bunch of you at TWS this sunday and i am getting bad ideas.

Thanks,

James Evans

Sorry James, no LS1 in a 3rd gen. You can run an LT1 in there though...pretty close, only off by one letter. LS1 is only legal in 4th gen cars.

Damn, i love ls1's (been working with them and keep spare parts), and i love 3rd gens (owned one for 14 yrs).

thanks for the reply, i'll keep thinking things over. Was nice meeting you on sunday.

You can run an LS1 in a 3rd gen in American Iron though.

Now that would be a freakin' track monster!

For AI i would have to run a restrictor I'm guessing or run AIX?

For AI you need to maintain a power to weight ratio. So in my opinion, build the car (as light as you can afford), then build the engine to match it power wise. I forget off the top of my head, 9:1 for HP and 9.5:1 for torque?? Don't quote me exactly...

AIX is no limits but you also would not have very many to play with. Personally I think a well thought out 3rd gen with an LS1 in AI could do well.

huh? Since when can we run an LT1 in a 3rd gen in CMC? Or do you just mean you can run an LT1 in CMC (in a 4th gen)?

I'm sure it was meant for CMC2, still no LT1 in 3rd gen "CMC".

I run a stock LS1 with headers in AI with no restrictor, but I also run a heavy car.

9.5:1 hp, 9.0:1 tq.

I've been following CMC for a year or so - i've got some good friends (Sam, Darcie, Gary, etc) and it would be fun to go play with them. But i have some other car hobbies that i really enjoy as well (I know its a bad word but i like drifting). I was thinking about building something i could drive in both events (and others).

I don't have the experience to go w2w just yet, and i don't want to build a series specific car - esp with the turmoil that appears to be out there ( example - http://www.aicmctexas.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3179&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30 , http://www.aicmctexas.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3236&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45 ).

So, for the time being i'm goign to finish a project that i have recently started and play, do some DE's etc. In the future when i have more DE experience i'll revisit the issue and look into making a series specific car.

Thanks,

James Evans

those posts are nothing to worry about. seems this kind of thing pops up time to time and never really goes anywhere. usually from someone who gets upset w/ NASA TX. for the most part (99%) folks are glad they are in CMC and see nothing but positive things in the near future.

James....did you use up those tires I sold you oooo, so long ago??

Look - there are folks in every region of NASA who are dissatisfied with some aspect of the organization, so don't sweat the typewriter tirades. The AI/CMC group in TX are a fantastic bunch, know how to race hard, help each other out, and have a good time doing it!

You like American V8's, so build a car, and go racing, be it AI, AIX or CMC.

yup - nothing like an el camino on R compounds at an auto-x

I'm still on the fence, i have an ls1 / t56 that i was planning on putting in a Skyline that i got cheap from a friend, and playing with it for a bit. I still have a lot to learn about driving and wouldn't be a candidate for w2w for a bit still. One of my drift friends (has Nasa & scca lic.) was intrested in doing CMC with me, and i thought it would be neat to have a CMC/AI car to beat on at drift events as well.

And this third gen won the CMC Hyperfest race the same day

The third gen is just an all around super car!

The fact you have significant driving experience already will only help. Even better that you have a friend ready to go into the whole shmegegee with you!

Build it!

No doubt, stop thinking about it and do it. I think a properly built 3rd gen with good reliable power would kick butt in AI or CMC2. It'd also do well at drifting and other shenanigans. If you're married to the LS1 go AI, if you can deal with an LT1 go CMC2.
