rocky Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 Well my third gen is a 305.I hope it will last through the de's.I am planning on CMC2.I am bouncing between the carbed 350 and the LT1.My question is Which would be easier to tune and hit the numbers?I am kinda leaning towards the carbed 350 cause I think it would be easier to tune and work on.K.I.S.S method of thinking. What are your thoughts and advice. Thanks in advance.Rocky Quote
Carson Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 a new 350 carb w/ vortec heads just went into my '87 pontiac trans am dyno #'s = 264 / 321 after modifing exhaust system and flow thru muffler = 252 / 301 CMC2 max #'s are 260 / 310 car 3200 lbs Quote
roadracerwhite Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Both are viable options for hitting the numbers. I think the carbed 350 is going to be more economical to build. Quote
rocky Posted December 18, 2009 Author Posted December 18, 2009 Thats kinda what I was thinking. That and the engine will be in its simpliest form and easier for me to troubleshoot and repair.I have heard about problems in the turns with a carb.Any insight on that?Or any issues that I might see. Can you go into detail a bit more on the build? What was the compression ratio? What did the original exhaust spec out at when you had 264/321 and what did you change to in order to drop the numbers to 352 / 301? Were you running the allowed 1" carb spacer? What jets and timing numbers did you end up with? thanks, Costas Quote

I haven't had many problems with mine. There are road race floats you can buy. We are starting to put an LT1 in our project car (third gen). Right now the wiring looks overwhelming, however after talking to Mitch last night has renewed my confidence in being able to do it. (thanks Mitch) By the begining of the season we ought to be able to tell you the good and bad about both. Bryan Quote
rocky Posted December 19, 2009 Author Posted December 19, 2009 Thanks Bryan.Glad you are doing the swap first.I know I could do it if thats the route I go.If I do I know who to talk to now if I have an issue.I think for now, after the 305 gives up,I will probably do the carbed 350 unless I run into a good deal on a LT1 setup. Thanks Quote
Shortcutsleeping1548534716 Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 While it seems like a lot, it really isn't that bad. I did this swap a number of years ago into a buddy's 92 B4C car. http://www.witchdoctormotorsports.com/ch23a.htm Holler if you have any questions. I made the factory dash work perfectly and everything. Costas cars and such... Quote

Carson Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 the first dyno #'s where done with the exhaust too low below the engine and w/o a muffler , the lower dyno #'s where done after a redo on the exhaust, which tucked it up for clearence, but added restriction plus added dyno max muffler. stock compression, no carb spacer, timing at 31 and not sure about the jets , but will depend on your altitude Quote

Lady in Nomex Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 We will see what we can do, right now its wires wires wires everywhere. I think this is a motor where the Painless harness is worth every penny! It took a long time to figure out why mine was part-time and eventually full-time 4 cylinder on track. Wiring connection problem at the fuse block for 1/2 the injectors! Old wires and a complicated harness not good. Quote
Carson Posted December 20, 2009 Posted December 20, 2009 I went w/ a new painless wire harness with the TPI 5 lt acouple years ago and it made a easy hookup for the new 350 carb motor and so far never any mystery electrical problems well worth the $ Quote

Shortcutsleeping1548534716 Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 That was Dean's car, right? Yup, it was Dean!s car....nice ride. While there are a lot of wires compared to an HEI/carb motor, it really isn't too bad. Get a factory service manual for that year and it will have all the pinouts and just start running wires. Glenn has volunteered help, and I'll volunteer also. Carson, thanks for the info, I was more looking for what exhaust tubing size you had and if you blended a y-pipe or what. Also, do you have the TPI exh manifolds (a bit larger exit diameter than the tbi manifolds)? Did you measure compression? Depending on the shortblock you used and head gasket it can vary by quite a bit. Thanks!! Costas cars and such... Quote
rocky Posted December 21, 2009 Author Posted December 21, 2009 I like a good challenge.I might just do the LT1 after the 305.All this talk about the wiring is getting my attention.Sounds like it could be fun. Thanks to everyone on the input. Quote

I think Bob has most of it figured out, we are missing one harness (the one with the fuse block and headlights (I assume) and it is a little confusing , because we have a 96 harness. The one we are missing has the 2 ten pin connectors(blue and white) and a four pin (black). Quote
Glenn Posted December 21, 2009 Posted December 21, 2009 give me a call if you want to chat. i can tell you a few things you may want to know. i'll be off work and in sunny AZ from the 25th to the 2nd and board out of my mind. call if you need help. Quote

jeffburch Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Can I put an LT1 in this? Maybe a LSx with a 4.8L crank? The -2 IS for the newer model cars right? And the hp/tq numbers are based on the uncorked LT1 right? http://www.motorauthority.com/image/100190711_the-basic-7000-package-still-requires-a-powertrain-fuel-system-suspension-glass-and-interior jb Quote
Members Al F. Posted December 22, 2009 Members Posted December 22, 2009 Put an LS or LT engine in that thing and I'll work with you every step of the way to figure out how to make it competitive without being a class killer. I figure we're about six or seven years before anyone is very serious about a 2010 camaro in cmc trim, but hey, I'm ready when you are. That said, I've heard S197 BIWs are going for closer to $2.5k, so you might want to swap to the blue oval! Quote

I actually only crawled out of my hole to check up on what the 3rd gen research lead to. Which brought out the devil's advocate again in me. It's not likely the amputated gangrenous cmc appendage will grow back anytime soon. jb Quote
