We are putting an LT1 in our project car.

Thanks to Glenn, Mitch, several schematics, several printouts and shop mainuals, I think we are well on our way.

We worked on it tonight and think we have a good plan so far.

It is in the car. Here is where we are at and a couple things to make note of;

1.Power steering pump and lines - have heard the LT1 pump will work with the steering box, but we are unsure about this. Need to do some more searching.

2.Fuel lines - Pure Choice Motorsports has adapter fittings to AN for both the LT1 fuel rail connections and the TPI fuel lines.

3.Wiring - Our engine is out of a 96 Camaro and we have the wiring harness and decided to use the stock harness instead of buying a stand alone. We are also working on splicing the lt1 harness into part of the TPI harness so we can use the stock gauges. You could definately spend your way out of having to sort through all these wires, but what fun is that?

Impressive and ambitious project. Please continue to provide updates!

1. Yes it will work just fine.

2. Yup. Not sure that is the brand I used, but I did buy some fittings that made everything bolt right up.

3. You can do it! Take your time, label everything and when you alter stuff make schematics. It is slick to have all the factory stuff work right.

If you guys aren't in a big hurry, I probably still have the AN fittings from the body side fuel lines when I ran TPI. They're probably in the trailer in the fitting/braided line bin though.

Intrested to hear what you learn. Also thanks to Mitch / Glenn / Mike, I just put an LT1 in my garage for future transplant.

Did some reading on thirdgen.org and saw info about the power steering lines. I remember mention about using an Impala (??) line that worked good. Think it was in the FAQ so should be easy to find again.

Is the PS pump being replaced with a Turn One anyway? My understanding from LT1 racers is that the stock pump can't handle the high revs all day long, no matter how much cooling is used.

We ended up using the PS pump and bracket off of a 96 Caprice. The 4th gen Z28 has a rack and pinion steering but the B bodys have the old gear steering box like the third gens. So it simplified things just to grab the bracket and PS pump off the caprice. Then we went to the auto parts store and got a PS hose for a 96 Caprice. Slight modification of the hose bends and it looks like it is going to work well. The car is not running yet but the punch list is getting smaller and smaller.

be sure to document all this and we can add a supliment to the rulebook that will address things like this.

UPDATE; It ran for the first time on Saturday. Fired right up. Need to look into a couple issues. 1) Dies after about 15 seconds 2) tach doesn't work

The o2 sensors aren't hooked up yet though (need to finish the exhaust) so we are a little unsure if that might be part of the issue with it dieing.

Next up is finishing up the exhaust and looing everything up. Probably going to be a week or two though, since it is so cold here -1 on the way to work today.

It was eye opening at how little wiring it took

2) tach doesn't work

I'm searching in my way-back machine, but doesn't a 4th gen (94+) use a different tach signal than the older models?

I seem to recall that an aftermarket tach has to be set in 4 cylinder mode.

only LS1 cars need the tach set for 4 cylinder mode. the LT1 cars are still on a V-8 signal set-up. its the 8 vs 1 ignition coil thing.

1) Dies after about 15 seconds

Does the fuel pump stay on? When I de-wired my '94 last year I took the fuel pump relay directly to key-on. Sound VATS or security related.

I subscribed to alldatadiy and printed a lot of the wiring diagrams.

Good luck, sounds like you're close.

I would look for this also. I had to purchase the VATS removal piece to get mine to work after I did the wiring on it. It acted very similiar to this.

Thanks for the advice guys. We will try looking into that and share our results when it gets a little warmer. It is not supposed to get above 20° for the next ten days. A high of 8° this weekend. ....Is it time for Hallet yet!

Man, and I work in the garage when it's -15 out. We won't see 20 degrees again until late Feb up here.

How's the car coming Bryan?

Quick question on the oil pan (if you're using the Canton)...

Are you able to use the 3rd gen (1pc rear) pan with the LT1 block?

Is the 3rd oil pump and Canton pickup swappable to the LT1 block?

Posted

The car is basically sold. We are working out some details with the new owner and it will be running in the midwest.

The answer is yes to both questions. LT1 block is basically the same as all one piece blocks, it just has a funky timing cover and casting in the front to accomodate the opti and water pump drive gear.

I ended up going the LT1 route in my 3G. I need to post up my parts list soon.

A thought occured to me today. A 4th gen with an LT1 can swap between CMC1 and CMC2 with a change in restrictor plate. A 3rd gen with an LT1 can't (per the rules). Doesn't seems right to me.
