roll cage home project

Building a CMC 2 camaro 95. Business is a little slow and money is a little tight. I have a friend with a fully furnished metal shop. He has never build a roll cage and neither have I. But, we both want to try it. Any tips or articles I could read to help in the process. I know it has to pass NASA rules. I'd be nice to find a how to article.

thanks Lee

Before you start on your own, check out several examples and ask questions. Why did you put that bar there? Why did you extend that bar there? How high should I put that? Where should I route this? Etc., etc. Pictures folks can provide will help a great deal, but there is nothing like seeing several different examples of cages in person and asking the owners of the cars the hows and whys of their cage. If you have the opportunity, also talk to different fabricators. Each one seems to have different theories on cage construction. Each one of their cages can meet the requirements of the rules, but look completely different. NEVER skimp or cut corners on safety gear.

This is really good advice.

Lee, you could talk to some of the 4th gen guys in the East just to see what they would have done differently. They would even send you some pictures. I would start with Sterno or Bennett.

Lee,

If you are the Raleigh area any time soon, look me up. You can take a look at the cage in my third gen. I had Competition Cage over in Hillsborough do mine. I also have a few photos of it when it was completed.

Having done a few cages and one tube frame chassis, I will say that you absolutely must get a tube notcher. Without it, you'll spend twice as long and your welds will not look nearly as pretty.
