aheld131548534742
I would like to get some of your input on brake set-ups for 3rd gens. What set-ups do you have? I was thinking about a 4TH GEN set up in the front and the same 4TH GEN front rotor on the rear with a single piston caliper. So basically 12 in rotors all the way around dual piston front single piston rear. Will this be a decent set-up or not??? trying to get a decent brake set-up cheap to start racing
roadracerwhite
Most people use the ls style brake caliper (98-02 firebird and camaro) on the front and the stock rear disc setup. You don't want to run those big rotors on the rear, there is no need for it, just more weight to turn. That much brake in the rear is just going to cause lockup and give you problems. aheld131548534742
ok thanks yea the 98-02 ls1 brakes up front was what i was thinking. but for the rear all i have is drum rears and i was thinking about putting a ford 9" in and it also has drums so whats the best rear disc brakes to run? Glenn
The 9" is overkill as well. Convert the stock 10 bolt over to OEM disc's from a 3rd gen or a 4th gen (93-97).
aheld131548534742
ok thanks for the advice i drag race too and i overkill alot of my builds but i guess your right the 10bolt should be ok with the horsepower restrictions i blew 4 10bolts apart in my camaro drag car then i put a ford 9 with 35 spline axles been good for the past 5 years but i got around 500HP in that
Glenn
I'm on the same 10 bolt I started w/ in 2005. Not enough power or grip to hurt one.
roadracerwhite
The weak part for a ten bolt road racing is the gears, but it depends on which gear you run. I have had good luck with 3.90's but 3.73's and 4.10's seem to wear out after about 13 races. As far as rear brakes go, I would stick with the stock pbr style calipers which came on 89 -97 cars you will need brackets from a third gen rear though. And there is enough flange on the rear end you have to convert it from drum to disc.
raybob92891548534723
Let me know if you need some 98& up front caliper brackets. I usually have those layin around and some caliper cores.

aheld131548534742
what do you guys think about this kit for rear brakes http://www.speedwaymotors.com/GM-75-Inch-10-Bolt-Bolt-On-Rear-Brake-Kits,14021.html
Glenn
You could buy a complete rear axle w/ the gears you need and the brakes you want for less than that. Then sell your current one for whatever you can.
roadracerwhite
what do you guys think about this kit for rear brakes http://www.speedwaymotors.com/GM-75-Inch-10-Bolt-Bolt-On-Rear-Brake-Kits,14021.html I don't know 300 bucks for everything new might be ok. The third gen brackets aren't the easiest to find and the 4th gen brackets don't fit on third gens. So you might look for something like these instead; http://www.ebay.com/itm/WS6-rear-disc-brake-calipers-and-brackets-Firebird-Camaro-Formula-350-1989-/250962599722?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item3a6e895f2a#ht_500wt_1413 The kit you posted a link to is more like the earlier style rear discs on third gens. They should work fine.

aheld131548534742
does anyone have a set of 1LE spindles ???
roadracerwhite
does anyone have a set of 1LE spindles ??? Most people just make their own, using the non-1le spindles. Just need a sawzaw, grinder, drill, and a tap. Something else to think about when tapping the spindle you might use a English thread instead of metric. Might make it easier down the road to get grade 8 bolts for. Bryan
nwv02
I modified a few sets of spindles and to share my experience, I would suggest you look for a set of late 3rd gen spindles to modify, in the 1990-1992 range. The amount of material around the hole that you are drilling and tapping is greater in those year spindles. My post is here: http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/posts/brake-board/593482-modified-z28-spindles-1le/4726877-post9.html Note: these holes were drilled to fit and accomodate the hardware for standard OEM GM 3rd gen 1LE brackets. Here is a good info page for the 1LE upgrade. http://www.ws6transam.org/1LEbrake.html
aheld131548534742
thanks for the info guys I didn't realize that the spindles were that close to each other i thought they were totally different
APatelIroc
what about those that have the C5 front setup? Is it that much better than the ls1 setup? is it worth the cost? Have you looked at bigbrakeupgrade or flynbye ? http://www.bigbrakeupgrade.com/ http://flynbye.com/ i was looking at the C5 front setup personally for when i get started on my build this spring. For the rear i also am sticking to the stock 93-97 disc setup.

Not sure if it is worth it, as far as I can tell; the only difference between the two is on uses corvette rotors (13in) instead of 12 in rotors. I run 16in wheels (GTA) so I am pretty much stuck with 12in rotors, Some of the 16 in camaro wheels will c lear 13in brakes though.
Members Al F.
C5 calipers and LS1 calipers are not the same. The C5 caliper is stiffer across the bridge and therefore more resistant to the clamshelling that some LS1 brake owners have experienced. They require a bit of grinding to clear most 16" wheels when mounted on 12" rotors but they will work.
APatelIroc
im planning on running 17" wheels so shouldnt be an issue. Was curious if anyone else ran this setup or not and was alos a suggestion if the money allowed for it.
