Going into the race last race weekend of the Midwest / Great lakes CMC season promised to be a good one. It did not disappoint. Five racers had a play for the podium for the season ending points in the Midwest region. Derek Wright and Kent Owens were tied for first and Bob Denton was 7 points back followed by Bryan White and Pete Loftus. The scenario was clear for Wright and Owens, win and you win the championship. For Denton he needed a pole point and two wins to win the Championship. Loftus and White needed a DQ of one or more of the top 3 and they would end upon the podium.

The weather was very cool with snow flurries. Yes, it was snowing while the race group was waiting on grid! Denton got the pole at 1:40.6 and Wright 1:40.9, respectively. Owens wasn't able to make a qualifying time and would have to start last in 9th position. The next 4 racers, Pete Loftus, Jim Mayer, Bryan White and Todd Johnston qualified 1:44.5 to 1:45.9, demonstrating the close racing in CMC. Spencer Caudle and Heather Clegg also could not post qualifying times and would start 7th and 8th.

From the pole Denton beat Wright through the first turn but Wright pressured Denton on the outside going into the Keyhole but Denton made a run out of the keyhole and lead the rest of the race for the win. Or so he thought. More on that later. Behind them, Owens was charging up through the pack and was in 3rd place by lap 2, eventually taking 2nd. Johnston got past White in the first lap at the Keyhole. Mayer, Loftus and Johnston were nose to tail for 2 laps before Loftus made a move down the back straight on Mayer. Johnston saw an opening and made it 3-wide before he out braked both Loftus and Mayer going into China Beach (Turn 7). The trio fought hard with each other, even while Caudle made his way through them up to 4th. Johnston and Loftus ended up finishing .21 sec apart, with their fast laps being .001 sec difference and on the last lap of the race!

The jubilation from Denton and his win was short lived. With the very cool temperatures, Denton and Owens both were DQ on the dyno going over on horsepower and torque respectively. This immediately dashed all hopes for a regional podium finish for Owens and Denton. Wright passed on the dyno needing to weigh 3390 to match his 266 hp. Wright weighed 3390 exactly and was at 310.47 tq, only .04 tq away from being over and DQ'd. Talk about cutting it close!

The official results were Wright, Caudle, Johnston, Loftus, White, Mayer, Clegg and DQ for Denton and Owens. This gave Derek Wright the MW regional championship. Johnston picked up the GL regional championship. Bryan White got 2nd in MW and Jim Mayer 2nd in GL. Pete Loftus finished 3rd in both regions.

Heather Clegg got her competition license and ran her first CMC race in October 2014, making her the first ever female CMC driver in the country! Heather is driving a 1995 Firebird Formula in CMC, but her daily driver is a 5th generation Camaro supercharged to 650+ hp. So she's used to driving CMC style cars. She has been driving in NASA's HPDE events for a couple years now and can't wait for CMC racing next year!

Wow...high drama for the championship.

You've all seen the "I was 7th!" video.....

That's exactly how I felt Sunday afternoon.

All said, it was a hell of a seson. Congrats to Derek for kicking our colective asses. And kudo's to the new kids who made it to the podium. Reguardless of how pathetic CMC is showing nationally, at a regional level, it's alive and well. Can't wait until next year....

None in CMC as of now. We had two in CMC, one as recently as 2 years ago, the other closer to 5 years ago.

Ummm, not sure where you got that. I have no problem being beat by a girl if in fact it should ever happen.
