2017 Rules Director's Cut

The rules should be published and online Monday, Nov 28th. This year there were no formal RCRs submitted by racers, but I do want to go through a few things the directors discussed and what did and did not change. In no particular order then...

Item 1:

We incorporated into the rules the allowance for internally balanced 302s per the 2016 tech bulletin.

Item 2:

We removed the list of allowed oil pans and instead simply allow aftermarket wet sump oil pans. The driver here is there are several manufacturers of good road race pans and we don't need to either maintain a list of all of them nor do we need to favor any one of them. If people get silly with this and start fabricating something that does anything other than a typical canton road race pan then we'll change the rule again. Meanwhile, enjoy your Moroso or whatever :)

Item 3:

We added a bit of wording around DQs to drive consistency in application: when NASA calls for a dyno post race and a car fails, the driver should be DQ'd for only that race. When a driver shows up to the track without a dyno and officials agree to let them run and seal the hood for post weekend checking and it ends up failing the dyno, that car should be changed to fun run for the entire weekend. In both cases local officials can choose to increase the penalty/change at their discretion (per current rules) based on circumstances such as repeat offenses, evidence of intentional cheating, etc.

Item 4:

We really would've liked to add better wording around what constitutes "ram air"...but couldn't come up with anything good. No changes were made.

Item 5:

We updated the allowable price of brake calipers. Thanks to Kent Owens for doing the research.

Item 6:

We discussed making an allowance for changing jets, and brought in folks from AI for their experience and for consistency. After discussion, the decision was made to not change the rules and to pay more attention to enforcing this going forward.

That's it...I think. Thanks to the directors for their participation in updating the rules this year.

The dyno sheet from the 2017 rules says 2016. Could someone correct that or can we cross out 2016 and write in 2017 since nothing else on the form has changed.
