In order to get an engine swap approved, I request that you submit to me the following information so that I can rapidly assess your swap. Incomplete requests will take much longer to process. Vehicles that do not have reliable published data available (most will be older or rare vehicles and engines) may need to have certified chassis dyno testing and weight measurement to be classed:

 

1) Engine donor vehicle--year, make, model

2) Engine--model #/name, disp, #cyl, valvetrain/var. valve timing?, hp/tq

3) Receiving vehicle--year, make, model, subtype and trim type (if applicable), curb weight

4) Reliable references (two reliable Internet sources are preferred) regarding the engine and car.

This is the list of engine swaps that have been approved for 2006 after evaluation for a specific TT driver's car, and the method that will be used to assess the swap. All of these swaps can be legally reproduced by any TT competitor:

 

Acura Integra Type R (JDM 220hp) swapped into an Acura Integra RSX Type S (US). The swap will result in the RSX Type S moving up to the TTC base class with a curb weight listing of 2600 lbs. 6-20-06

 

BMW E36 328 2.8L (190 hp) swapped into BMW E36 318ti (2734 lbs). The swap will result in the E36 318ti moving up to the TTE* base class. 10-12-06

 

Ford Escort LX SPI 2.0L SOHC (110 hp) swapped into '91-'96 Ford Escort LX. The swap will result in the Escort LX Hatchback moving to the TTG* base class with a curb weight listing of 2391 lbs. and the Escort LX Wagon moving to the TTG base class with a curb weight listing of 2484 lbs. 6-20-06

 

Ford Escort ZX2 Zetec 2.0l VVT (130hp) swapped into '91-'96 Ford Escort LX. The swap will result in the Escort LX (hatchback and wagon) moving to the TTF base class with a curb weight listing of 2391 lbs. 6-20-06

 

Mazda 323 GTX ('90-'94) BP-T 1.8L (176 hp) swapped into '91-'96 Ford Escort LX. The swap will result in the Escort LX (hatchback and wagon) moving to the TTD base class with a curb weight listing of 2391 lbs. 6-20-06

 

Mazda 626 KLZE 2.5L (JDM 200hp) swapped into '91-'96 Ford Escort LX. The swap will result in the Escort LX Hatchback moving to the TTC base class with a curb weight listing of 2391 lbs. and the Escort LX Wagon moving to the TTD** base class with a curb weight listing of 2484 lbs. 6-20-06

 

Nissan CA18DET (175hp) swapped into an '89-'94 Nissan 240SX (140hp). The swap will result in the Nissan 240SX moving to the TTE base class, with a curb weight listing of 2700 lbs. 5-10-06

 

 

All of the swaps listed below have been incorporated into the TT Rules v. 3.9.6, released 4-17-06.

 

Acura Integra B18C1 (GSR) swapped into a Honda Civic (2300#). The swap will result in the Civic moving up to the TTD base class 2-2-06

 

Acura Integra B18C5 (ITR) swapped into a Honda Civic (2300#). The swap will result in the Civic moving up to the TTD** base class 2-2-06

 

Audi 80 2.0L (108/113hp) swapped into an '81 VW Scirocco 1.7L (74hp) body. The swap will result in the Scirocco moving up to the TTF class, with a curb weight of 2040 lbs.

 

BMW E36 325i 2.5L (189hp) swapped into a BMW E30 325i (2765#). The swap will result in the E30 moving up to the TTE* base class 3-8-06

 

Eagle Talon turbo 2.0L 16v (210 hp) swapped into an Eagle Talon non-turbo 2.0L (4g63) chassis/body of equal weight. The swap will result in the car moving to the Eagle Talon Turbo's base class of TTE*

 

'69 Ford Mustang 351W (290 bhp, 232 net hp)(TTF*) swapped into a '66 Ford Mustang 289W (271 bhp, 217 net hp)(TTF*). The swap will result in an increase in the '66 Mustang's listed curb weight by 210 lbs to 3190 lbs if the alternate method of weight reduction mod points is used. If not, a +11 point assessment will be made.

 

Mazda Miata '95 1.8L (128 hp) swapped into '91 Mazda Miata 1.6L (116hp) body. The swap will cost the competitor +3 points

 

Nissan (JDM) S13 SR20DET (200hp) swapped into a Nissan 240SX (155hp) body (TTF). The swap will result in the Nissan 240SX moving to the TTE** base class, with a curb weight of 2700 lbs.

 

Nissan (JDM) SR20VE (187hp, 145ft-lbs) ('97-'01 auto) swapped into a Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V (175 hp,180 ft-lbs, 2.5L, TTE)--does not include SR20VE from '01-current 6sp manual (204hp). The swap will result in the Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V moving up to the TTE* base class, with a curb weight listing of 2740 lbs. 3-20-06

 

Nissan (JDM or USA) VG30DETT (300ZXTT) (300hp) engine swapped into a Nissan 300ZX Z-32 2+2 (n.a)(3414 lb) (222hp) body. The swap will result in the Nissan 300ZX Z-32 2+2 (n.a) moving up to the TTD* base class, with a listed curb weight of 3475 lbs. This swap does not apply to the 300ZX Coupe (3219 lbs)

 

Pontiac Firebird 3.4L V6 (160hp) swapped into an '88 Fiero 2.8L (140hp). The swap will result in the Fiero moving from TTF to TTF** with a listed curb weight of 2778 lbs. 2-3-06

 

Pontiac Grand Am '99 3.4L V6 (175hp) swapped into an '88 Pontiac Fiero (4 cylinder). The swap will result in the Fiero moving to the TTE base class (from TTH**), with a curb weight listing of 2590 lbs.

 

VW Jetta 2.0L 16V (134hp) ('90) swapped into a '78 VW Scirocco 1.6L (75hp) body. The swap will result in the Scirocco moving up to TTE (from TTH**) with a curb weight listing of 2040 lbs

 

VW Scirocco 2.0L 8v (ABA) (115hp) swapped into an '80 VW Scirocco 1.7L (74hp) body. The swap will result in the Scirocco moving up to the TTF base class (from TTH*), with a curb weight listing of 2040 lbs.

 

VW Scirocco 1.8 L 8v (90hp) swapped into an '81 VW Scirroco 1.7L (74 hp) body. The swap will result in the Scirocco moving up to the TTG base class (from TTH*), with a curb weight listing of 2040 lbs.

Greg: regarding the revised upclassing for a car with an engine swap....what basis are the rest of the points calculated against?

 

For example:

I own a 94 Civic with a stock B18c5 (Integra type R) engine swap.

So right off the bat I'm in TT-D + the 15 point handicap.

 

So when the TT calculator asks me how much wider my tires are from stock. Do I go off of the 175 spec the stock civic comes with or do I use the 195 oem spec the Integra uses?

 

What about for brakes?

My civic comes with 9" rotors up front and drums in the rear stock, I have upgraded to the regular Integra (not the Type R) braking system which uses a 10" rotor upfront, along with larger calipers, and a smaller disc setup in the rear. The Integra type R comes with an 11" front rotor and even larger caliper than the regular Integra and larger rotors/calipers than the regular Integra in the rear.

So my current setup is an "upgrade" from the oem civic equipment, but is technically a "downgrade" from Integra Type R system.

 

If you could clarify if the base upclassing ONLY applies to the engine/transmission or if applies to the rest of the car (brakes, suspensions, tires, wheels, etc.) I would appreciate it.

The upclassing only applies to the engine and tranny (but not an LSD or final drive change) if the two car models are not the same as in this case. (In the case of Miata into Miata, or Talon Turbo into Talon, the update/backdate rules may still apply--check with me or your TT Director to be sure in a specific case). And, the swap only includes the stock version of the engine being swapped in. If you need to use a different ECU or any other parts (intake, etc) to make it work, then you need to take points for those mods also, unless your car has individually been classed based on dyno results and actual weight.

The 187-hp JDM SR20VE swapped into a 1991-1994 SE-R or 1991-1993 NX2000 results in what new base class under this year's classification? It's a popular swap and probably worth getting on the books.

So do engine swaps have to be approved? I thought you just got so many points for it. After looking again though, the online classer thing does not add any points for a swap. So I guess I want my swap approved...

 

It is a 1.8L CA18DET (175 HP) swapped into a 1989-1994 Nissan 240SX

 

It's a fairly popular swap, but not as popular as the SR20DET of course.

So when a curb weight is listed on the swap, is that the minimum weight of the car for that class? Say your car weighs 300 lbs less than that yet you added all the applicable points... Can you still run that class?

I classified your swap (TTE base class with a curb weight of 2700 lbs), even though you didn't follow the directions to e-mail me the info. Please e-mail me your name so I have it for my approved engine swap records.

 

The curb weight listing is for you to use as your starting point if you decide to use the alternate method of calculating weight reduction points. If your competition weight (no driver, coming off the track at the end of a session--i.e. low fuel tank) is more than 300 lbs (but less than 320 lbs) under your curb weight of 2700 lbs., then you need to take 11 points. Your final class is determined by the number of mod points that you have.

simple question that would determine if the official method needed to be done...i couldnt find this in the rules

 

are you allowed to mix and match from different makes? like an ls1 in an rx7 for example? obviously if you could your base class would move way up, but just wanted to check if its even a possibility

Yes, all engine swaps are possible. Some need to be classed based on the actual dyno hp and actual competition weight of the vehicle after it is built, though.
