I'm currently researching to find the best final drive for my 1996 Integra LS for Honda Challenge H4 class. I was wondering if any other Honda Challenge H4 guys with a similar car has any suggestions. I plan to install a Quaiffe LSD at the same time.

What I've found so far is the JDM Integra Type R 4.785 final, 4.857 from Spoon? (I'm not sure about this one), and finally a 4.928 from ATS.

I'm basically trying to top out 5th gear at around 125 MPH. To do this, I would need a final drive gear of about 5.2. There's no way we'll be going faster than this on any of the tracks on the West. The long straights at Elkhart Lake, WI might be a different story, but even then I don't think I would run out of gearing. And I don't know if I'll ever race the car there.

So far, it looks like I would go with ATS, but it's almost $800 (yikes!) so I'm going to look as long as I can before the start of the '04 season for something larger if it exists. The 2nd gen non-vtec Integra had a shorter 5th gear (0.742 sweet!) where as the 3rd gen has a dog of a 5th at 0.714 (ouch!).

Thanks for the info guys! Let me know if you find anything new or have other suggestions.

I would run the ATS gear, expensive but you get what you pay for.

My cost is nearly 900 on this r and p set, and I am a dealer for ATS, I know that Anthony finished second in ita at the ARRC with this gear, that should tell you it is a good gear. Fowler won, so home track advantage is a little bit of an advantage...not taking anything way from tom, but more track time for anthony there and look out.

I really dont know where you guys get your numbers from. I have a 4.78 on my LS tranny at 7K rpm it goes to 135MPH and it may go more if it had any more power. It should do 150MPH Easy at 8K rpm but it never gets there in fifth gear. It goes 115mph in 4th gear at 7500 RPM.

O.K. this is a little long.. but it will show everyone the #'s. This is based off a '95 LS trans running 205/50/15's. Remember, if you want your speedo to be accurate after changin the final drive, you will need to recalibrate it with somthing like the yellow box.

Gearbox:- b18B1 stock

Tyre:- 205/50 x 15

Top Gear gives 21.911 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 157.757 MPH at 7200 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 34.873 MPH

And changes into 2 gear at 4235 RPM dropping 2965 RPM

Top Speed in 2 gear = 59.283 MPH

And changes into 3 gear at 4809 RPM dropping 2391 RPM

Top Speed in 3 gear = 88.762 MPH

And changes into 4 gear at 5481 RPM dropping 1719 RPM

Top Speed in 4 gear = 116.603 MPH

And changes into 5 gear at 5322 RPM dropping 1878 RPM

Top Speed in 5 gear = 157.757 MPH

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gearbox:- b18B1 with 4.785

Tyre:- 205/50 x 15

Top Gear gives 19.534 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 140.646 MPH at 7200 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 31.090 MPH

And changes into 2 gear at 4235 RPM dropping 2965 RPM

Top Speed in 2 gear = 52.853 MPH

And changes into 3 gear at 4809 RPM dropping 2391 RPM

Top Speed in 3 gear = 79.134 MPH

And changes into 4 gear at 5481 RPM dropping 1719 RPM

Top Speed in 4 gear = 103.956 MPH

And changes into 5 gear at 5322 RPM dropping 1878 RPM

Top Speed in 5 gear = 140.646 MPH

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gearbox:- b18B1 with 4.928

Tyre:- 205/50 x 15

Top Gear gives 18.967 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 136.565 MPH at 7200 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 30.188 MPH

And changes into 2 gear at 4235 RPM dropping 2965 RPM

Top Speed in 2 gear = 51.320 MPH

And changes into 3 gear at 4809 RPM dropping 2391 RPM

But here is the thing I run 225/50/14 so i get a little more speed out of every gear at 7500RPM.

This was just a base line. I was using what seems to be a popular size "race" tire that toyo offers. All the numbers are very close approximations. I did not include actual tire size, tire pressure variances, etc. But it does give you an idea of how much of a change the gears will give you.

with that in mind. I was originally thinking of going to the 4.5 (not pictured), that would give me a little more speed without having to go into 5th gear. In the 94-01 LS trim the 5th gear seems to be really for fuel economy, and wondered how it would affect the performance it I had to shift into it.

Do you guys get into 5th?

I use 5th gear at buttonwillow only on the back straightway coming out of taladega turn, also i use it after the esses coming form MAZDA turn. I use 5th gear at willow springs on the front straight and after turn 7 to turn 9. And ofcours at california speedway right before the strat finish line i use 5th. It doesent really pull but just rolls in that gear. Its wierd. But if you want to run 4.5 final gear you will have to go a gear lower otherwise you will drop too much into lower rpms.

I understand that.. that was the reason for thinking of using the 4.5. I would not have to go into 5th. At Sears Point and Thunder hill I know of a couple of spots were I would be in 5th gear.

With the 4.78, the gears are short and i pull away really hard in 3rd and 4th gear, people thingk that i have lots of HP. 2nd is kinda short but its only used once a lap at buttonwillow for the hairpin. and once at cali speedway for the hair pin there.

I love my gears except 5th.

Actually you are running a smaller tire than a 205/50R15, so you would get less speed out of every gear.

Circumference;

225/50R14 ~ 71.78 inches

205/50R15 ~ 72.41 inches
