Let's get some new 944 drivers into HPDE!

As I've mentioned to several of you, I'd like to get some more new guys "up and coming" in our great class. Mike from Tehachapi, Frank from Long Beach, Chris Barrington, Rich Bessette from Llano, etc.

You don't need to have a finished car to start running it and learning the tracks. Seat time is key and you'll learn more in one weekend from hanging out with the 944 guys than you will staying at home reading racing books and watching race videos. All you need is a safe, reliable car. It doesn't even have to be your 944! But come look at the cars and ask questions. Tell the guys who you are and that you're interested in the 944 class. They'll be helpful and informative, as always.

Once again, if your 944 rolls and runs, start driving it with us in the HPDE groups.

Once I get some suspension work done and get the various leaks fixed, I'll be back out there. Shocks that don't even last 18 years...what a piece of junk

Cross your fingers that it passes smog in a couple weeks. Running around 2005 tags is getting old.

a car with good mechanicals and that hasent been involved in a serious wreck. interior dosent matter as that will be stripped. stock 15x7 wheels a bonus. probably should run you from high end $5000 to lower end $2,500 maybe a flat 2.... any less and it could have mechanical issues that will have to be adressed before heading out on track and any more will usually net a car too nice to tear up

Racercosmo,

Where are you from?

You can start with any of the eligible years. I prefer the 85.5 and 86 because they are late model without getting into the ABS offset years of 87-88. I like to find cars that are cosmetically good. No body work needed. If they have records showing they've been maintained, great. The things that usually kill a street 944 are clutch, timing belt, head gasket (water in the oil). It costs more to fix than the street value, so the cars get junked.

I'd spend a bit more money to get a good 944 to start with. The most I've spent was $2,500 on a nice 1986. Shop around. Make sure the chassis hasn't been bent. Extras to sell off are nice, like Fuchs alloys, leather interior, M030 package, etc.

hey guys, names luke Prinsloo

i had a 944S when i started college and actually got rid of it... thinking that it would keep breaking on me (car had sat for 7 years and had 50k miles). turns out the guy who paid 2k for it has yet to have another problem with the car.

i now drive a mazda 3 (2003)

i curse the day i drove past the clemson autocross clubs event and didnt use my car. I now regularly use my mazda to autocross and have gotten my father (1983 911 with more than a few mods) to get addicted as well, we have been considering getting a car to just use as an autocross and are considering many things...

would a 944 be good at autocrossing? im in class F with the mazda and its exhaust/cai... but in order to be compettive i would have to get race slicks for teh car.

a dream would be to own a 944 turbo... but then thats just a dream...

mainly could you tell me more about 944 spec? ...

Luke,

Cool to see your interest in our great class!

Go to the 944 spec website at http://www.944spec.com

There you can find the rules, lots of pics, the cars, drivers, etc.

You can do a search on this forum for any particular aspect of the 944 spec cars. Or just ask a more particular question here.

BTW, 944 spec is it's own unique class in NASA racing.

Tim, things are on hold as someone hit the rear of my 525i REALLY HARD to where the trunk is gone (rear wheels won't turn and rear doors won't open) while 4 people are on board. I need MRIs of my neck and will be out of commission for at least a little bit.

Frank,

That sucks! Hope you feel better soon. Dylan Scott went thru all that crap already with his neck problems.

Luke,

You can build a 944 spec car on the east coast now because the class is recognized at every NASA and PCA Club Racing event. There are plenty of events out there between those 2 clubs! Don't have your racing license yet? Enter the NASA HPDE's for great track time. Send me your email in a PM and I'll put you in touch with a 944 spec guy from North Carolina and 4 others from Virginia. There's another car being built in Ohio as well.

My article in PCA Club Racing News will hit the news stands very soon and then interest in the 944 spec class on the east coast is going to explode!

You'll have someone to race with in equal cars soon enough!
