LIMITED SLIP TRANS NEEDED

Hi Folks,

I am a rookie with both the SPEC 944 program and with NASA. This is my first time to post on the forum, but have enjoyed all of your comments and information. I recently purchased an '86 944 race car which is very ready to go except that it doesn't have a limited slip trans..... I could probably get along as is for now, but am afraid as I get more involved, I will suffer without the limited slip. I'm not sure I want to go the "welded" route, as I feel it will hinder the car's speed??? Your thoughts are welcomed.

With a welded diff, every time it's working for you by keeping the wheels from spinning, it's working against you by not allowing the outside wheel to turn faster than the inside one. Trade off, but I don't know in what proportions.

There are a number of us who have raced successfully for years without an LSD.

My advice is to NOT weld the diff, start racing now, pick up an LSD when the price/condition is right for you.

I agree with Tim. The LSD is really one of the last things you'd want to think about for improving lap time. Even in corners where it would be helpful, you can usually take a little different line and sort of 'drive around' it without losing much time. As you've read ad nauseum in this board, seat time is most important. The shorter 5th gear is important on tracks where you're in 5th for very long.

I run my car with an open diff and have done so for years. One day I may get one, but even without one I feel I can win or aleast do very well at most any race. For me I don't believe the lack of an LSD is the difference between winning and loosing.

PS.. I thought Norm had one or had line on one?

Guys,

Thanks for the info on the limited slip situation...Believe I'll just sit tight with the non limited slip trans for the time being. Joe, Norm did have a LSD, but just installed it in his race car. Not sure he has even driven it on the track yet.

I though he had it in the car when we were out at the east track in June for that early am event. He never got lap times however.

The trick is to wait and find an LSD going cheap...

... Sometimes I think it easier to win the lottery...
