spazegun2213 Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Alright guys, I'm trying to ask everyone i can about my weekend. I fianlly got the car running and I love it. Its a blast to drive and i seemed to pick it up fast. The only thing that concerns me is i went through 5 quarts of oil this weekend. I was not burning it or at least the 2 people i had follow me and look said there was no smoke at all. I also checked under the car and nothing was there, not even a drop. The last place i checked was the coolant bottle which was clear. there was a oily residue in the J boot, but it was not an obscene amount at all. So I'm really at a loss where 5 quarts could go? There is a little oily residue on the bottom of the oil pan (on the fins). I'll probably clean that off and run it again and see. Is there some place i have not checked? thanks! Quote
Tim Comeau Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Oil can only go 2 places when leaving the engine. It's leaking out or being burned off through the engine. Let's dial out the other variables........ Are you sure it was 5 qts? No smoke out the tail pipe? Oil residue in the J boot means the oil vapors from the lower block are being vented properly up through the separator and back to the intake manifold to be burned off. You could have worn out valve guide seals? How tired is the engine? Piston rings? You might start by cleaning the whole engine area off well. With that much oil consumption, I'm guessing your problem is part leaking and part burning off? Quote

I know it was 5 because thats ho much i added to the car After the first session the car was on the lowest oil mark. I added 1.5 quarts then (brought it almost up to full) tracked it and kept having to add oil. the total was 5 quarts added to the car. No smoke at all, not at idle, or on the track. I hear though that if there is a lot of oil in the j boot/air filter box, the AOS seals are going. I might investigate this more. Guide seals, i have no idea, is there any way to tell without tearing the motor apart? the engine again i have no idea what condition its in, but it was racing 3+ years ago (the car, maybe not the engine). The top of the engine is clean, so I'll clean the rest of it this weekend and go from there. I assumed because it didnt blow up or sound funny at the end of the two days there is a leak somewhere and no major problem with the motor. EDIT: i just remembered someone said check the head gasket, could this be bad? Quote
Tim Comeau Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Nope, not the head gasket. Please don't let the oil get that low again. We check it before every single session. I fill it to 1/8th inch OVER full. Quote
