Cutting holes in the front fascia

Recommended Posts

I double-checked the rules and it appears I can drill "speed holes" in the front fascia of my 924S to allow airflow for the oil cooler. I'm big on appearance, so it'll be tasteful.

Am I correct here?

I still haven't received my oil cooler that I bought back in June( ) but it looks like I'll need to create an opening for it. By looking at pictures it doesn't look like the factory lines are long enough to reach the pre-existing opening for the rad.

Thanks,

who are you getting the cooler from or is this an e-bay sale?

Rules allow foglight holes for brake ducts or for use in oil cooler. They also allow the center bar to be cut to allow for more cooling.

No allowance to cut the 924S spoiler. Rules do allow for mods to improve reliablity and adding an oil cooler certainly does that.

Not sure what other 924S guys have done for oil cooler mountings, but if done well you are probably ok.

Tim... anything you want to add here?

Is this a turbo oil cooler or other?

It was an eBay item, but from a Rennlist member (I don't want to publicly name them) but I'm getting a little frustrated at this point.

Do you have a 951 setup for sale perhaps?

The cooler is a factory turbo setup from an '87 (apparently).

I was basing my assumption on this statement:

16.1 Exterior

The exterior must have a clean and neat appearance.

Assuming the hole(s) is/are subtle and skillfully cut, I'm sure the panel will be "neat."

I'm open to other suggestions!

There is probably a tried and true method out there that I haven't seen yet...

Thanks guys,

I wish. I've been thinking of going that route and wondered if this was a commercial supplier that was being flaky or an individual. I may just break down and do the KISS cooler.

Well I got my factory setup for $120 shipped, but we'll see if it ever shows up. IIRC there are more factory bits on eBay right now...I don't recall the seller, but it's NOT the seller I've been having trouble with.

If you're going to add an oil cooler, don't put it in front of the radiator.

Put it off to the side. See pics on Joe's website.

I have never used an oil cooler, but have always used new or fresh radiators.

Make sure your oil cooler isn't vulnerable to track debris.

Off to the side leaves it behind a solid panel though! I certainly don't have to tell you ( ) the 924S doesn't have fog lights...at least mine doesn't.

I just received the housing and lines last night...but no cooler! I probably have another 2-3 months probably before I ever see the cooler, so I have time to get the mounting for it resolved. The lines aren't very long and don't give me much of a choice as far as installation goes. I'm thinking 3 circular holes with chicken wire behind the opening. IIRC a 944 Spec 944 had similar cut-outs in it's front bumper for cooling.

Here is a picture of the area I would like to install it (passenger side of the rad):

And here is the panel I would like to cut speed holes into, to allow air flow for the cooler:

What's the verdict Director(s)?

Thanks,

Pretty vulnerable. How about putting it up behind the turn signal, then removing the turn signal for racing? You're going to need nothing bigger than 1/4 inch weave wire cloth (screen) to protect it. When the "facia" rule was written, I believe Glen meant cutting the header panel between the headlights.

I hadn't thought of that area. That just might work. I'll take a look tonight.

Thanks.
