Helldin Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Well guys.. I been racing for many years and owned a lot of Porsches...And raced Camaros and Pontiacs for most of the time. However.. What is your opinion on using power steering v/s delete. I have used power steering on all my race/track cars since 1988. I just bought this -90 S2 to build for PT/Supercup. .. Power steering rack is F****d up.. convert to manual or keep P/S... I like the P/S myself..kept it on my 951 track car and on my street car. Opinions and thoughs please. This new baby (Evelyn) is at my house and ready to get ready for track. Per Helldin. -07 Supercup/PTD/E0 1990 S2[/img] Quote
944 Swede Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 I drive without PS. I tried both and no PS gives me much better road feel. Plus one less fluid to worry about. Since I'm muscular challenged it just makes it a little harder to steer in the pits. Heja Sverige Quote
Helldin Posted August 14, 2006 Author Posted August 14, 2006 Mikael Thanks for your input. Have to trust the champions advice... Less weight and one less fluid that can leak. Per Heja Sverige! Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 I like manual steering too. power rack without power is a pain in the paddock, but nice on the track. A proper manual rack I feel is the best, but these can be hard to fit to late offset cars like yours. Tie rods are longer and the power ones don't work. The proper ones can be hard to find. The only downside to lack of powersteering comes when the front tires get big. I could get too tough to turn the wheels. In our 2600 lbs 225 mm front tires this is not a problem. Quote
Helldin Posted August 15, 2006 Author Posted August 15, 2006 The only question left I guess. If I retain the power rack and remove power steering hoses etc. Any other mods to the rack needed? Quote
Tim Comeau Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Nope, people just fill it with grease and plug it up. You'll find that the P/S rack acts quicker than the manual one, so get ready to use more muscle and make bigger steering inputs. I love my power steering because it's quick acting and let's me drive 3 hour enduros by myself. Per, I thought you were from Norway or Finland? Quote
Helldin Posted August 16, 2006 Author Posted August 16, 2006 Ok Tim Will follow your advise. And plan to drive 3-hr Enduros by myself too. Please do not call me Norwegian or Finnish ever again ! Or I will have to team up with Mikael and kick your ass! Looking forward to be part of the 944 group. Per Quote
Tim Comeau Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Ok, you're not finnish or Norwegian. That only leaves Hungarian? That's all we need is another Swede! 1. Anders 2. Mats 3. Mikael 4. Per Where's the Viking ship all you guys came in on?! It would be great to have you in the 944 group. Quote
Norman#99 Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 I'm with Timmay on this one as well, Mickey's car does not have power steering and during the race at WS turn #2 (going up the hill) I started to notice my muscle challenges. I drove his car at Firebird East track (very short with tight turns) I had to turn in a good bit earlier than in my car with power steering and did notice a lack of responsiveness as compared to p/s. I beleive the dyno differance was maybe 1 hp, can't remember exactly, but it was minimal. I really don't feel that it makes a differance time wise, so for me it's a personal preferance, I am getting old and looking for all the conveniences. If we start changing rules, I am all for (1) working air conditioners (2) with windows up (3) quiet exhaust (4) killer sound system with the really boomy base to drownd out the other loud cars. Please vote for this, as for a 3 hour enduros will be much more enjoyable! Working Cigarette lighter, ash tray and cup holder are optional. Looking forward to running with you Per! Norman #99 Quote
Helldin Posted August 16, 2006 Author Posted August 16, 2006 Norman Looking to forward to seeing you at the track. Wish you would have stayed up here on the Central Coast, we need some more Porsche racers up here I plan to run this car mainly in Endurance races. If I remove P/S I may have to start working on my arms. Plan to do 3-hr races without a co-driver. So what I probably will do is make an initial runs with P/S in morning sessions. During Lunch brake remove/Disconnect and then run and compare. Per Quote
josephsc Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Hi Per, good to hear my old S2 is starting to become a track car! Sorry about the PS rack.... I recently gutted my old PS rack, greased it up and resealed it after running it w/o a belt for two years. Greasing it up made it easier to turn at low speeds -- no difference at higher speeds. It also let me throw away alot of unnecessary components. You can also go the way of true manual rack, which give you more leverage, but you have to turn the wheel more. Quote
Helldin Posted August 22, 2006 Author Posted August 22, 2006 Joe I told you "Evelyn" went to a good home. After a week of vacation I am ready to get going . All suspension pieces needed should be here this week. Will go on scales on Wednesday before being removed of unnecessary items. Per Quote
