944Cup – Road Atlanta Report

A rainy day in Georgia greeted the ten 944 Cup racers for Round 6 of the SouthEast and SunCoast Chapters at Road Atlanta in August. Saturday’s qualifying found a new Chatahoochie River across the track at the bottom of the ‘esses’, and made every patch of concrete an adventure in ‘slide management’.

For the standing start, series Super Cup leader Karl Troy had his 944 S2 on the pole with Robert Hahn’s 944 Turbo right beside. Even though Joe Crowell Jr. threw down the fasted lap with his 944 Turbo S, he finished second with Karl Troy taking the win in SuperCup.

Victor Kelley started his 924S on the pole, but spun with hard contact on the white flag lap in turn 10. Scott Campbell finished first, followed by Lee Davis, as Kelly limped his car down the hill for third, just beating Scott Proffitt.

Sunday’s weather was perfect for making horsepower and the turbo cars in Super Cup showed the way with Crowell first and Patrick Clifford’s 944 Turbo second.

Davis took the win in 944Cup, and finally ‘de-throne’d Campbell, with Stacey Freeman taking third. Florida’s Raffaello Ambivero fought mechanical problems all weekend but managed to make the track for both races to take the season lead in the 944 Cup SunCoast Chapter.

last bump for photos. I'll leave them on Shutterfly, but I'll likely delete the high-res copies off of my hard drive in the next few weeks.
