ledfoot2 Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 I am getting into the AI class. I am planning on a Mustang. For all of you experts; if you could start again with any car, what would it be? Which year would you choose, what would you look for in a base car? What equipment would you add? I am leaning towards a 95 5.0, possibly a Cobra. Thanks everyone! Quote

Grizlbits Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 As far as close, competative racing with relatively no maintanence, I have to agree with Brian. Get a Miata. Damn, I agreed with Brian twice in one month. Quote
white_2kgt Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Depends on your $$$. The FOX's are cheaper to build initially, but the are like punching a brick through a piece of concrete when it comes to aero. The SN95's IMO are ugly as sin. So I choose to stick w/ the 99-04 style, little better in the areo dept, takes a little more work to get the weight down. If I had deep pockets I would have picked up one of the newer ones (S197's 50+) to start over with. It really comes down to prefrence and remember, you can put any engine in any of them, you can run a 5.0/5.8 in the 99's or a 4.6 in the Foxes, if you wanted, but engine selection is a whole nother can of worms. Tom Beverly Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 A spec miata.....sigh. I would have to agree with Tone after building track Mustangs for over 10 years. The Miata is easy to build, competative and reliable, (and cost isn't too bad either)... However I really love the Fox body coupes, but the truth is I'm addicted and have too many spare parts to stop now. Quote
Rustic Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 but the truth is I'm addicted and have too many spare parts to stop now You just summed up my situation in one sentance!!!!... Quote
Red Tornado Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I went with a 2003 cobra. If I did it over and money was no object I would do a 2003 Ram Air Firebird and say screw it with no contigency or cheap parts cause it wouldn't matter. Quote

I would tend to agree, anything Spec: SpecMiata, SpecE30, SpecFocus, 944Cup, FFR However I really love the Fox body coupes, but the truth is I'm addicted and have too many spare parts to stop now. My situation exactly, the car I took to the nationals was built ENTIRELY from spare parts lying around my garage Damn, I agreed with Brian twice in one month. Damn, I think I just did it twice in the same month too! (I think I am going to be sick ) Quote
pederb Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 If you want to stay with GM how about a GTO? Great engines and tons of racing stuff from downunder. http://www.pbase.com/uli1/2003bathurstmonaro Quote

trackboss Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 If those V8 supercars were more easily available along with parts as affordable as the mustang I'd be all over it for AIX! It doesn't help however that GM just canned the GTO. Quote
Red Tornado Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 That was the joke.... If they actually didn't stop making them in 2002 maybe some more folks would be racing them. No give me any 94-02 z28 (I havent seen enough firebird aero kits and that's what moved me from them). Add some nice aero. a ls6 motor for reliabilty and anice coil over setup from LGM and watch out. trackboss Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 Some guy used to post on here about building a GTO. Had all kinds of nice drawings and seemed determined, but just disappeared. Wonder what ever happened. Quote

ledfoot2 Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 I just bought a 95 GT roller. It has no motor or trans. I thought it would be a good starting place. I am figuring on a full MM suspension setup. Motor-wise, I was thinking about a fairly high output carburated 302 with a restrictor for AI, and no restrictor for the PCA events I like to run. Does anyone have good links to build-ups of these cars? There seems to be a lot more for the Foxes and the later chassis. Anyone have a cheap drivetrain lying around that they want to get rid of? Thanks Guys.... I am getting there. Quote
rlogan Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 We have a motor, Tremec 3550, aluminum drive shaft, and McLeod bellhousing to get you started. Quote

Add some nice aero. a ls6 motor for reliabilty and anice coil over setup from LGM and watch out. 2nd, 3rd and Quattro! I wouldn't go with LG stuff, but that's the right idea. The factory geometry is much better than the mustang mac-strut, the rear is all basically done, just slap in solid replacements. Drivetrain should be a home run no matter what combo you choose. The only problem is that the rules don't allow for the removal of the psuedo firewall below the windshield and you can't truck-arm the rear (which is B.S. considering the length of the trailing arms folks run in the Fords). Lots of folks talk about the F-body being too heavy... if that's true then I guess they only have to worry about being out-handled on the straights. Currently I'm really happy with my mustang, but maybe I'll secretly start assembling an f-body for sh*ts and giggles. Quote

Red Tornado Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 I almost did that. I don't like being one of many but the facts just smacked me hard across the face and said no f-body. Now if they come out with a new one in two years I might just convert back over! Quote
