B18A1 H4/ITA pistons?

I think I will be building an H4/ITA engine for my 90 Integra over the winter. I am starting to research and was curious about pistons. I see there are plenty of .020" over pistons for the B18A1 application, as well as plenty of .040" over pistons for various other Honda/Acura applications. I would appreciate any advice anyone has had since I am sure a number of guys already have built engines. Should I try to make another application fit to get the full .040 over? Or do I need to stick to the specific B18 application and stay at .020" over? Best case is if anyone knows of specific .040" over pistons for the B18A1.

Thanks for any information.

Nobody? OK, maybe just suggestions on what piston manufacturer to contact. I have looked at SRP, JE, Wiseco, CP, Arias, KMS, KB/Silvolite. Ross, and Supertech. Any others?

Topline and flat line both make a .040" piston for that motor... I think if you talk to the right people at RE they have a cast for it too..

Jared,

I use Topline pistons in my Prelude. For my first engine I used .040 pistons, but after doing more research and talking with several very knowledgeable Honda people, I'm using .020 pistons for this build (the there's no cost difference between them for my application).

You might also want to try posting some questions over on honda-tech.com in the racing section.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am relatively new to this area (import engine building) and am not really familiar with Topline. I guess they can stand the rigors of racing from the sounds of it. I will also see what the guys at Honda Tech have to say (thanks for the suggestion).

I will show my noob status again, but may I ask what RE is? Is that a particular race shop. Thanks.

Interesting. I have thought about this, but figured if the rules allow .040 over, I should do that. May I ask why you chose to use .020 over this time? Is this a performance versus dependability trade off that isn't worth it? Thanks.

HC rules are a little different than the IT rules so be careful if you want to be legal for both.

Factory replacement pistons or the exact equivalent shall be used. Exact equivalent shall be defined as the same dome/dish/valve relief configuration, weight, ring thickness and location, and pin location as the OEM replacement piston. Wrist pins and method of retention must also conform to OEM specifications. In the event that a .040 factory replacement piston/wrist pin is not available, the oversize pistons/wrist pins shall not weigh any less than the largest size OEM piston for that engine.

You need to make sure the aftermarket pistons meet the above rule in full.
