I'm thinking of making a bracket up high under the dash where the glovebox used to be and relocating my ECU box from the passenger floor to this higher location. It gets pretty wet sometimes in Oregon, and with a totally stripped car there is a possibility that an instructor or passenger in my car would have wet feet. I want to prevent any potential issues.... I assume this will not be an issue? Quote

schwank Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 Late... so the ECU was already mounted behind the passenger floorboard. I have plenty of free wire to move the box up perhaps 18" or so... there is a mounting point for a bracket in the back of the glovebox area that originally held a U bracket securing the rear of the glovebox. I have removed that bracket and intend to replace it with one tailored to the ECU box. Bonus is that the passenger area gains a bit more foot room, not that there will be any problem, or for that matter, many passengers! Quote

Tim Comeau Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Well, there's something new to me. The 1987 924S has the DME under the steering column like the early 944's because the chassis is early. The 1988 924S has the DME in the late model location under the front passenger floorboards? I wanted to move my 1986 DME to a custom bracket INSIDE the glove compartment, but the extra cross bar on the cage went right through the glove compartment, which had to be removed! The idea was to get it away from the heat of the headers and any water that might intrude from the hole where the blower system was. So I straightened out the wire bundle and zip tied the DME to the passenger side of the cage, right on the door bars. This makes swapping between my DME with no rev limiter, and a stock-chipped DME with rev limiter for newbie rental drivers very easy. As far as being legal to move it? Ask yourself, Why am I doing this modification?" There's no performance gain. It's just for reliabilty (water) and improved access to systems, both of which are in the rules. This is allowed AND ENCOURAGED. Now other guys will probably move their DME out of harm's way and YOU will have made the class better off for pointing out this mod. Good on you. Any other ideas? rsrdan Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Tim Are you sure of that I built a 84 cup car,which has an engine/wiring harness/andECU from an 88 924S.I seen it myself before removing it.it bolted right in and harness/ecu is under driver side dash....then the engine bit the dust,so i have one from an 87 the DD sold me. DavidH Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Very good topic. We had a bit of rain earlier in the year and some water got in my DME. Therefore the car did not start. It appears to have gotten in from the battery box area. I was going to make some sort of cover/protector, but rather than doing that I will just move the darn thing. Thanks for the ideas guys. Quote

I thought Chris ,88 924S, said he had a shorter harness that didn't allow the same movement? Time for some caffiene... I KNOW the 87 924S has the computer under the steering column. Is the 88 924S the same? I have one out on the street, so now I have to go look! It should be the same logically.... Anyway, I'm glad we talked about it! Quote

Only the late 44's should have it in the floor IIRC... Glad I could get the wheels spinning for some people... my have spun enough to keep me awake at night lately, so I might as well share! Quote

Here is my DME (88 924S): It's been a few months since I worked on the under dash stuff, but I seem to recall my harness would not allow me to move my DME up under the dash. I probably could have cut the tape to free the DME lead, but I didn't feel comfortable cutting into the main harness. So this is interesting...Tim, your 88 924S has the DME under the steering column? 944-Spec#94 Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Chris is that is probably the worst spot for the DME. Reason is that water tends to leak down right on that area if you pulled the heaterbox. That is right under the hole for the blower. The only place my car leaks water is right onto that spot. While it maybe pain to get to teh under the dash is really safe spot. Not much can get to it and I have not touched the DME in many years. It just sits there. Quote
