Matt Ammon Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Hi everyone. I've been interested in 944s for a while now, and just having recently moved to Seattle, I'm trying to figure out whether there is enough local interest in the 944 Spec class to justify purchasing one to race in the NASA 944 Spec and/or PCA SP1 classes at any of the three tracks closest to me (Pacific Raceways, Portland, Spokane). Reading back through several pages of posts, it seems like there are a bunch of NorCal racing opportunities with NASA 944 Spec, but I don't want to always have to drive a long distance to go racing. A few long trips per year are fine, but I'd really like to focus on my local tracks if possible. So, what does the PNW 944 racing scene look like realistically? For some background, I've never raced before. I have roughly 40+ DE days in my 2001 Audi S4 (a bunch of different tracks) and I'm looking to take the next step into budget-minded racing. I'm a sucker for German cars, though, so I really want to focus on BMW or Porsche. There are some E30 3-series folks in my area, so that's a possibility, but I just really like the 944 and would love to make it work for me. Thanks, and sorry for the newb-like questions. I'm sure you've heard them before, but I honestly did read a bunch of threads here before posting! Oh, and from what I can tell from the rules, a 944 S2 does not work in 944 Spec, correct? That's what I've been wanting, but I don't want to be stuck in a higher budget class, so if there are some normal 944s racing local to me, I could be persuaded to go that route instead. Quote
944-Spec#94 Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Matt, Right now there is not an organized 944 spec group in your area. A few things are driving this. Firstly NASA does not have a region in that area. Second PCA does few races over there. Now this does not mean you are all on your own. There is a car being built in the Portland area. Eric posts here under "schwank". Also Greg Fordahl of Fordahl motorsports is in either Seattle or portland and has group running 944 spec type prepared cars in SCCA. These cars not strict 944 spec cars, but are somewhat similar. Here in Arizona some 944 drivers have petetioned couple local racing orgs to adopt 944 spec rules and even the local SCCA has a 944 spec type class (slight rules differences). So you can built a 944 spec car and grow the class and rules while not running any NASA events. There is also a Skip Grehan in Seattle that I believe is build a track 944 to spec prep levels for use in DE and maybe racing. So inspite of no formal organization there you still should have cars you can run with. Quote
Matt Ammon Posted October 25, 2006 Author Posted October 25, 2006 Thanks, Joe. Eric is the one who directed me here (I've been asking similar questions on AudiWorld). Quote
Utah944 Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Matt- There always has to be a first. I am the one and only in Salt Lake City and I am actively recruiting others and hope to build the class here. If you build it they will come................... btw a trip to Norcal is well worth the effort. I made a trip in August and had a blast with the group there. Quote
