srry for another ? need advice on Wing

How you guys doing. I recently had an idea to try and construct my own wing. But my older brother (who is an engineer) insists that I do not even try, because I could accidently create too much drag, or possibly even LIFT. Im still skeptical. I notice a LOT of AI guys have wings and I was wondering where the HECK i could find some. I found the G-Stream (tiger-racing) wing but thats going to run me about $3,000. I was looking for a a cheaper one or making my own. Any ideas or input please? thanks c ya

I’m not sure where you came up with the 3k number, but the AI/AIX cars along with some other classes I have sold wings to have been $1395 for the wing and an average of $240 for the mount kit. Basically $1600 will get you what you need.

I can tell you from experience since I have sold several types of wings over the years from the cheap $500 aluminum pieces to the $2500++ carbon ones and that the G-Stream piece has out performed them all in our testing.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me next week after SEMA at 626-967-6796 or [email protected].

Thanks, Paul Brown

sorry i wasnt bashing you wing at all or anything!!! if i wasnt poor id buy it in a heart beat haha. I was looking on your site and I saw its costs about 1300 for the wing and then 700 for the mounts the 3 was a typo 2**

No worries, I've been a broke racer all my life and know all to well. The price list on our website is wrong and we have actually lowered prices. My IT guy is slow on the updates, I'll get that fixed.

Here is the current pricing for the G-Stream products. Mount type "D & E" are the most popular. http://g-stream.com/files/price_list_7-13-06.pdf

Thanks, Paul.

Is your kit offer that much more grip then a stock cobra R wing and front splitter??

Am curious as I am doing those probably....

Depends....

thier wing adds 500 lbs of downforce at 100 mph or something, my guess is that is far better that the cobra r splitter/wing

corvetteracebodies.com offers a 6' C6R style wing (camber flattens out in the center) if you want something fancier. It isn't that much more than the wings you are looking at. Also hardbar has them, but their site seems to be down.

You ABSOLUTELY want an airfoil wing. I've seen some cars running aluminum wedges (just flat plate bolted onto stands, at an angle), and while they will work, you get only half the downforce of a true airfoil at a given drag. Also, they tend to stall at very low angles.

hey david, what do u mean by airfoil im not too familiar? do you think a homemade wing will create too much drag (there will always be some drag no matter which wing is used, or am i wrong on that one?) or possibly lift INSTEAD of downforce?

this, but turned upside down. You want a rounded front, tapering to a point at the rear. Also, camber (curvature) upward is important also, for a high downforce/low drag combo. Pretty much any wing you buy (including the little ricer wings) have an airfoil shape, but it it hard to do at home.

do a search for "nasa foilsim". Not our NASA, but the other nasa. It is a nice program that lets you enter dimensions, and it spits out approximate downforce numbers for you. You can even enter a flat-plate style, and see how bad the downforce is compared to an airfoil.

wow, looking at this site, if any air is hitting my saleen spoiler i have on my mustang now, its actualy capable of producing a lot of downforce. im just not sure weather or not ANY air gets down there on a hatchback

David - Thanks, this model works pretty well.

I have a HPM wing (TransAm and WC type wing), 68inches long, 11inches wide, about 5.6 Sq Ft

The test results are about what HPM and I figured:

AVG speed: 80 miles perhour

Wing Attack Angle: 10 degrees

Altitude: 1,000 ft

DownForce: 240lbs

I chose these perameters as 80MPH is about our typical average speed, with 2 tracks in the west getting as high as 95+MPH avg. I typically keep my wing between 7 to 10 degrees angle. At the slower/techical tracks, I sometimes increase the angle to abot 13 degrees.

ive been trying to find the "HPM" website but i cant seem to pull them up. Could you post a hyperlink or adress? thanks

HPM went out of business, to my understanding. Try G-Stream (gStream) wings. Paul Brown of Tiger-Racing sells them, as well as Maximum Motorsports. Its not cheap though, the wing alone is about $1400 I believe. I would also search other wings in the market, it wont be that easy, but most important, is the dimensional size of the wing and it being some type of Foil (not just a flat blade). the other thing being height and position on the car. Best being as far back as possible, but rigid as possible, and equal height as the roof line.

Just a couple quick notes and clarification for you guys, HPM is still around, however since I left they have changed ownership and moved 402-731-7301. Some of the same people are still there I hired 10+ years ago but road racing isn’t there focus now. The race shop side that built the wings is now run by Mike Moss and is listed as Moss Racing at 402-614-5881. I think he still offers the aluminum and or carbon HPM/Liebeck profile wing.

We ran that wing for 3-4 years before testing the G-Stream piece and I can tell you first hand that the G-Stream out performed the HPM/Liebeck profile in all areas. We ran the HPM or Liebeck profile at 6 degrees with a ½â€
